Re: Rappel Sites

Looking for some rappel sites to practice at. Somewhere between 100' and 200'. Something I can scramble to the top of without any technical climbing. 1-2 hours from Phoenix. Thanks for any ideas.

The tunnel already exists. It's near the resort's east entrance and is used for golf cart access.

Re: AZT Gear?

Every campsite below the rim on the GC-AZT will have an ammo can to store your food. But hanging has worked fine for me outside of the corridor trails.

Re: Deer Creek/Thunder River 10/28-30

@rcorfman
The permit I have is for five but I can call the BCO this week and see if they'll let me add one more. I have the group permit and the group permit for that use area is supposed to allow up to six, as I understand it. Are you still "interested" or are you ready to commit?

@rcorfman
I could do either trailhead. Whatever the group wants. Cranberry Route could be an option too. Or the middle fork of upper Deer Creek.
We should leave Phoenix early Friday morning.

Deer Creek/Thunder River 10/28-30

Deer Creek/Thunder River Loop, October 28th to 30th. First night at Deer Creek and second night at Upper Tapeats. Total mileage is around 26 over 3 days. So far there's 3 of us (Preston, Joe, Me) going but I'd like to add 1 or 2 more. The catch is you need to have a vehicle that can get to the trail...

Thanks! Maybe I'll hold off. I was thinking of doing segments 2 through 9 but I don't like the idea of all that snow. Maybe just 2 and 3.

Any idea what Mica Mountain or Manning Camp down in Tucson might have for snow right now? I'm thinking of doing some southern AZT segments soon.

Re: GC NPS Seeks Public Input - Backcountry Management Plan

@SkyIslandHiker At the meeting yesterday, one of the park service personnel I spoke to said they would likely use recreation.gov (not a government agency but run by reserve america, which is owned by Active Network) to process the day-use permits. So, yeah, there will definitely be at least some co...

Re: GC NPS Seeks Public Input - Backcountry Management Plan

@nonot
To me it just looks like they're eliminating large group permits from Wild Zones for private users in plans B and D. Plans A and C would remain the same as now. I'm only reading the exec file though. Can you post a screen cap or page number on the big file?

Re: GC NPS Seeks Public Input - Backcountry Management Plan

@nonot I could be wrong but I think that the new rule for the wild zone would only apply to commercial guided trips. But I did read somewhere else that commercials would get to reserve their permits one year in advance while private users would still be at 4 months. Permits for day hikes to the riv...

Have prices gone up a lot on these? I bought some Jetboil 100g cans at Sports Authority maybe 1-2 years ago for 3.99.
