2017 AZ Canyoneering Rendezvous

Anyone else headed to the AZ Rendezvous next week?
If so, it'd be fun to meet up and run a canyon together.

I'm excited for my first time off during the spring in a very long time!

It sure rained a lot! Oh well, I finished anyway.
What satisfaction to put on dry clothes at the end. ;)

Re: Hiking pain and pill popping

Never thought much about the pain meds I carry in my first aid kit. But I guess they're more for other people than for myself, since I have only taken any once that I recall. Have given plenty out to others. Discovering the joys of a spiky foot massage ball has eliminated the only recuring cause I e...

@azbackpackr
Mid-Nov was the Rock 'n Roll half here, I think?
I did one with my mom up in Oregon more toward the beginning of the year.

Re: 2016 Hazolutions

This coming year: 1: Complete my last section of the Tonto Trail - the Gems. Finally! Permit in hand for early March. 2: More backpacking, even if just small over-nighters. Only 2 backpacking trips this year. Just depressing. 3: Explore new-to-me areas nearby. 4: More canyons. 5: Help my mother tra...

Re: Week in Death Valley

To these suggestions I could add the Eureka Valley. Way northwest part of the park, so depends where else you're going, but spectacular. A closed valley with tallest dune system in CA. Usually very few people. Primitive (aka free) camping. The road was graded within the last year, so may even still ...

Re: Happy Thanksgiving

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving to all. I hope everyone is able to opt outside today instead of being stuck at work or shopping.

As usual, our festivities began with a 5K turkey trot. I blew away my previous PR.
Imagine that - running in prep for marathon helps with running short distances! :sl:

Re: Vandals destroy Death Valley's Racetrack

A recent article in our local Las Vegas paper (http://m.reviewjournal...) indicates the park may have some kind of lead.

Also of interest, it shows a schematic map of where the tracks occur on the playa - basically the entire length :(

Check out the ATA Shuttle page at http://www.aztrail.org/shuttles.html
They have several suggestions that could work for you.

Re: GPS repair

@Tough_Boots Yeah, they don't actually repair the units, regardless if they still make them. It is cheaper to them to just throw it away and give you another. The units I have sent in are not made anymore either. Glad to hear your fix is holding up - something to keep in mind if I get a unit back w...

Re: GPS repair

Having had to do so for work many times, you can send in GPS units to Garmin for "repair," if the unit is registered on your Garmin account (you can register it right before sending in). Anyway, what they really do is say, oh we don't make that unit anymore and pull back stock from some warehouse an...

Re: Vegetarian meals and trail snacks

Do you have WinCo Foods there? Their bulk section is very comprehensive and much more reasonably priced than a place like Whole Paycheck. I make trail mix by mixing together my own selection of nuts, fruits, etc from the bulk bins - it never gets old because I can add different things every time. Th...

Re: hiking ban during hot temperatures

Hmmm... There is an interesting parallel that has happened here. There are several "trails" that Lake Mead NRA now officially closes from mid May - Sept since . The main ones (Gold Strike Canyon and White Rock Canyon) are both places you see an inordinate number of people hiking with no water and di...
