Re: Favorite Water Treatment?
The Sawyer Micro looks interesting except for the foam bottle part. Seems like it would be an unnecessary nuisance most of the time. Can you buy just the filter part? With threads top and bottom it gives all the same options as the original squeeze, including using the coupler for cleaning. Oh, and ...

Re: NB AZT - questions around Patagonia
@quetzal I don't have answers for your questions, but there might be a problem with Blue Heaven Road if you plan to walk to the western end. Salero Road which would take you back over to SR82 is now gated and locked where it goes through private property near the creek crossing.

Re: Favorite Water Treatment?
@Mudhole I read a comment somewhere, attributed to a Sawyer representative, that that method is ok for the mini, but not enough pressure for the Squeeze. You end up just clearing a narrow channel through the filter. I use the coupler with a sawyer bottle and sit on it, blasts the junk right out. I ...

Re: Humphrey's Peak Backpack via Inner Basin Trail
"This immense stratovolcano captures large amounts or rain and snowfall, yet surface water is scarce. Moisture drains down rapidly through fractured bedrock and much is sponged up by porous volcanic rock. The closest river, the Little Colorado, is connected to the peaks by drainages but rarely ...

Re: Snow heading NOBO, starting Late March
I went through the Huachucas (Passage 1) a week ago. The snow wasn't bad. A bit crusty and slippery in places, but for the most part you could walk in previous hikers footsteps. I'm not sure-footed at all and I made it with just trail runners. Spikes would have helped a bit in a few spots, but I app...

Saguaro National Park by Tucson is one of those that was a monument, https://www.nps.gov/sagu/planyourvisit/snp-history.htm
The president can create a monument from federal land. It takes an act of Congress to make one a national park.

Re: Southern Terminus Access
I have been curious about this myself. I kinda like the idea of not having to walk south to then turn around and walk north. On sat photos (bing might be a little clearer) you can see the road along the fence gets to within 0.4 miles of the terminus, with about a 400 foot climb. The road is dirt of ...

Re: Tuscon hiker lost for 4 days on Mt. Lemmon
I agree about the unnecessary days. He had a compass. With a map he could have seen that north was the wrong way to go. He would have been back at his car in time for his lunch date. I also agree about the food. A few days without eating won't kill you. Without water, can. Even worse, prickly pear p...

Re: Trail is red and black rather than all red
If you are talking about the passage maps on the AZtrail website, on the AZT 5 map the solid red portion is passage 5, while the red and black portions indicate the trail on adjacent passages 4 and 6, so you can see 5 in context.

From Gardner Canyon to Rincon Creek (passages 5-8) you have a fair chance of meeting a few dayhikers or mtn bikers, if the weather is ok and it's a weekend. Many of the times I've been out I haven't seen anyone though, so I wouldn't count on it. I have limited hiking in passages 1-4 but I believe th...

@Widowmaker The inReach with the Safety Plan will do that for you. With tax and fees it's about $13.50 a month for the service, or about $12 more a year than the Spot. You get 3 unlimited preset messages like with the Spot, but you get confirmation back that the message was received by Delorme's sy...

@Widomaker By itself the ResQlink is just for rescue. You can subscribe to a service like 406link.com which can send "OK" messages to a recipient, but the total number of messages are limited so that the battery is not run down too far (only 12 messages with a gps fix, for example). Read t...

Carrot's book was excellent, too. I believe she's working on a CDT book now. I thought she was working on her train riding book. She didn't enjoy the CDT that much, and that might make for a boring book. I liked her PCT book. And Foskett's PCT book, haven't read any others. I also liked Wild, book ...

Re: Overnight backpack trip this weekend from Phoenix
I would be interested in any reports of people making a backpack out of the WOR loop during the summer. I have always struggled with two issues - the overnight parking rules are very confusing, and the fact that there doesn't seem to be good camping until you descend about 2000-3000 ft where it see...

Re: AZT Passage Divisions?
I think the ranger was misinformed. The ATA website still has the trail through Summerhaven as the official route. The Pusch Ridge bypass is an "official alternate". As for why Romero Pass is an endpoint and not Summerhaven, if I recall, going through Summerhaven used to be an alternate ro...

Re: AZT Passage Divisions?
There was some discussion http://hikearizona.com... recently. One benefit I can see is for people that want to hike one section at a time. Beginning and ending at (or at least near) a road accessible spot would make it easier. And maybe evening out the section lengths. They range from 8 to 36 miles.

The last I knew it was still allowed to ship fuel canisters as long as you followed certain rules. Has to ship ground, be labeled ORM-D, etc.
I haven't thru'd but I think you'll find people using everything from no-cook to alcohol to iso to white gas.
