Re: Missing hiker in Mazatzals - gpsjoe (Joe Domin)

I've been following this thread closely. Lower back issues preclude me from doing any hiking right now. I have spent considerable time in the Mazzy's, albeit some years (and about fifty pounds) ago. When this thread started, I had a thought about the route from Mormon Grove TH to Squaw Flat to Round...

You are right Desertgirl; they don't hibernate, they nap. The bear is really a wonderful animal and it's the lucky hiker who gets to see one. Bears are no reason to avoid the backcountry anymore than sharks are a good reason to avoid the ocean. The same primary rule applies: Do not look like, or act...

Bears and Kalashnikovs

Very few bears carry Kalshnikovs....Seriously, the AK-47, shoots a round known as the 7.62x39mm. With apologies to all those who have been killed by one, it is not an extremely effective killing machine. The developer of the carbine, General Kalashnikov, once stated in an interview that the cartridg...

Joe- since I'm one of the old, fat and slow crowd, I really appreciate that extra four miles to drive in. I've spoken with the Mesa District Ranger several times over the years, and I don't know if they have decided on a course of action. If someone wanted to go in there some day with a rotary hamme...

Just got back from Hart Prairie area. Only 20% turned, but looks as though many higher up are turned and those over 10k may be down. Doesn't look like a spectacular year for some reason.

Camping at Saddle

Please exercise good bear management tactics in the area. No food in tent, bear bag all foods and toiletries. Don't sleep with clothes you have worn while cooking or eating. Not sure what the resident population of ursines is now, but before the Lone Pine fire, the area had more than one bear per sq...

Might try calling Mesa Ranger District and see if the wilderness dude has been there this fall. I've found that early October was good. The northernmost orchard had the best ones last time I was there.

The jury is still out on whether the Phoenix blend really does reduce pollutants. Purely hypothetical. Any gains are obviously far outweighed by the damage done by all the cars idling in line at the gas stations for hours on end..... Of course Detroit got waivers on fuel standards and drivers hours ...

Elk

When I was with ADOT, I managed a long range study of SR 260. Numers of accidents involving elk cited above in this thread are not at all out of range. One night while driving between Show Low and Heber (about 34 miles) we counted 18 elk ON THE PAVEMENT. Their fur is surprisingly non-reflective,so i...

Census of Maricopa County, Year 2000: 3.1 million; Year 2010: 4.15m; Year 2020: 5.2; Year 2030: 6.25; Year 2040:7.33 This means that by 2040, there will be no one left in Philly, and it'll be a wilderness again, Penn's Woods..... running

RedRoxx's comments remind me of when a woman was attacked and killed by a lion while jogging near Ranch Cucamonga, Ca. some years back. New developments built in wildlife habitat sometimes create unfortunate encounters. The lesson from this accident is to never run (I haven't in years, and have the ...

Kachina Trail

The trail description and map is on Traildex. The Th is on the Snowbowl Road off SR 180 NE of Flagstaff about 5 miles. There is a new sign next to the road which points out the trail.

Handgun

I certainly am no stranger to handguns. I love all guns and have quite a few. I used to carry all the time in the backcountry, and stopped after I discovered that in 20 years of packing that iron, it had never been needed for protection. I lived in Cochise County for a while and did lots of hikes in...

Here's an update on the road situation around the San Francisco Peaks. FS 151- Hart Prairie Road is three miles past the Snow Bowl turnoff, not 1 1/2, I was just there and did the whole thing. Near its northern end return to Highway 180, FS 151 junctions with FS 418. This road goes east around the p...

List

Billy, I have found that one can get into more trouble day hiking than backpacking. Backpackers tend to carry lots since they are going for multiple days. Day hikers, since they travel light and fast, can find themselves overextended and having to bivoac. That's why I always ask myself what I would ...

Squaw?

I certainly agree with MaryPhyl. I don't think that placing her name (Lori's, not Mary Phyl's) on a peak in Phoenix surrounded by bahana controversy is respectful to her memory or her family. I think that her clan and the Hopi Tribe may wish to make a request which the entire state could take to hon...
