Re: AZT Gear?

Hi. Just finished the azt. I would strongly recommend a foam pad. There is nothing worse than an inflatable pad with a hole. Very hard to get gear replaced or fixed along the way. Believe me. It happened to me. Also met another thru-hiker with a busted Pad. I used an ursack. If you cannot hang it in...

Re: The best way to get to the north terminus (State Line CG)

Got a Shuttle out of Page to the trailhead. Was $100 I think. Great service. Pickup at airport with stops for shopping.

Re: leg gaiters

Thanks a lot everyone! I was not worried until a friend recommended gaiters. I am not used to snake country, and last year lightning/thunderstorms actually did make me quit the trail.

leg gaiters

I'm planning on hiking the second part of the AZT (LF Ranch to southern end) this fall (October). Wondering if anyone recommends leg gaiters for/against snakes.
I hiked the northern part last fall and only saw one snake - in the GC. I usually hike in long light pants.

Re: Accessing Northern Terminus early September

Hi. When I started I flew from ANC to Page (via Phoenix) and then got a ride from Yermo 435 689-2182. He did a great job, quizzed me about my gear and plans. He also stopped for my last-minute shopping (stove fuel and water). I can only recommend him. Everything went very smoothly and reasonable in ...

Re: How to get to trailhead at highway 87

chumley, appreciate clearing up the legal aspects. I did have a harder time getting rides in Arizona than other places.

Re: How to get to trailhead at highway 87

If hitchhiking is illegal in AZ, is there another option to get from HWY 87 to a supply town? Are there quite a few people hiking in the area, one could ask for a ride? Of course don't know yet when I'll be there...

Re: November thru-hike?

It's rather lonely out on the AZT. I started about 3 weeks ago and so far have met one other Thru-hiker and that was north of the Grand Canyon. Not many dayhikers either. Just around Flagstaff and GC. Great trail though. Also there is the Arizona Trail app which works offline if you have a smartphon...

Re: Looking for other 2015 AZT sobo Thru-hikers

For me the easiest way to get to the northern trailhead is flying into Page. It is pretty affordable. Then either a taxi to HouseRockRoad (about $2per mile, they said), then walk/hitchhike or get a transfer by Paria Canyon Adventure Ranch. We'll see. Still working on start date...

Re: Flagstaff parking

A few years ago we rafted the Colorado River and stayed at the Super 8 in Flagstaff the night before and after our 30-day trip. They let all of our group park there for free during the time on the river. No charge. No trouble. And nice hot showers...
