Re: Mindless weather chit chat
no Snowbowl is great for people who live in Flagstaff The 500 people who are only employed there when Snowbowl is open might disagree with that. The City of Flagstaff website lists Snowbowl as a bullet point of attractions that contribute to the local economy during what is otherwise the "low ...

Re: Mindless weather chit chat
Flagstaff just passed 50 days with no precipitation, and temps have been much above average for most of that time. Despite an above-average monsoon and a relatively wet winter, we're now below normal for the year for precipitation. Snowbowl has delayed their opening twice, and now I think it's postp...

BTW, if your only head covering is a beanie, you're going to need something more. There are lots of insulated balaclavas available, and the lighter ones only weigh a couple of ounces.

Re: Cold weather backpacking up North
We don't do much winter camping, but we do plenty in the shoulder seasons with temps down to the 20s. I use a 15 degree quilt on top of a z-rest and a thin torso pad. Clothes are a powerstretch beanie, synthetic balaclava, t-shirt, light tights, and super light liner socks. That will keep me warm do...

Re: Proposed NPS entrance fee increase during peak seasons
@JimmyLyding If National Parks are seen as a playground for the rich (more than they already are), why should Congress keep funding them? I agree with your 3 goals, but Republicans are looking for any excuse to cut funding for the parks. And if they are seen as nothing more than tourist destination...

@rcorfman I understand that. This is another woman who some of us are familiar with, not on HAZ, though. She talked for a year about doing the Argentina to Alaska walk, went to South America, then quit. She was making a splash in the newspapers for other things at the same time. Long-distance walki...

That's sad news. I've read just about every book ever written about Glen Canyon. Her book "All my rivers are gone" is the best one, hands down.

I don't get it. Several people died on the PCT this year. Or is that the joke?chumley wrote:These two should hike the PCT next year!

Re: Desert bighorn sheep poached near Yuma
@chumley I guarantee that the actual number of bighorn poaching incidents is far higher than the number of poachers who are caught. Arizona is too big with too little law enforcement on public lands to catch most poachers. If the poacher takes the body to turn it into a trophy or food, there's no e...

Re: Proposed NPS entrance fee increase during peak seasons
If you can afford the gas and overpriced hotel rooms anywhere within two hours of the GC, spending an extra $20-$40 a carload to go in the park isn't that big of a deal. This would be a seasonal increase, so if you don't want to spend $70 to go to the parks in question simply wait for the months wh...

Re: Proposed NPS entrance fee increase during peak seasons
Or maybe they'll see the $80 annual pass as an investment and choose to use it all year long. Not all people below the median income have the same opinions or priorities-- way to empathize. I don't understand what you're saying. I'm saying that $70 makes a park visit unaffordable or close for a lot...

Re: Desert bighorn sheep poached near Yuma
If you follow wildlife-related news, poaching of all species is super common in the US. Studies have shown that around 20% of all the deer and elk shot by hunters are shot out of season by poachers. Someone in Flagstaff shot a deer with an arrow a few years back (which means it was probably a hunter...

Re: Proposed NPS entrance fee increase during peak seasons
Why not go even higher to ensure that no one below the median income in the US can afford a day in the park? I'm sure a lot of people on this site will support this. Empathy is not Arizona's strong suit. Meanwhile, the NPS budget is still scheduled to be cut. This will just mean more money from visi...

Re: Highline trail hunting season
You'll need to look up the hunting seasons on the regulations pages (those 2 big pdfs, on the page Chumley linked to, one has elk, the other has deer). Contrary to what Chumley said, you're pretty much looking for deer/elk seasons on the Highline. There are hunters out for other game, but numbers ar...
