Return of the Painted Desert Rendezvous

Post by PaleoRob »

So folks I finally return to the site after too much time away. I have been wanted to get back out backpacking and Randal messaged me the other week about Pilot Rock in the Petrified Forest. I've always wanted to get up there so it didn't take much convincing. September 27th and 28th. We'll probably meet up the night before in Holbrook to allow an early start. Head out into the Wilderness, make camp near Pilot Rock, and ascend. The next day it is back to the vehicles. Simple PeFo meetup. Folks are welcome to hike out on the 27th for the day as well. Lots of fossils to be seen and some prehistoric artifacts will crop up for sure.
Randy and I are co-organizing this so feel free to send any questions our way or post them here.
Let's do this!

Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in! I put it on the calendar! (Yikes, I had better get my feet in shape! I have new boots, hope they help my problem.) I will have plenty of opportunities to hike in N. AZ this coming summer. :y:

On second thought, it may conflict with a 75-mile kayak/canoe trip I was hoping to do on the Green River. However, if I am employed, which I am planning on being, it would be way easier to get a weekend off to do the PEFO trip than it would to get 10-12 days away for a river trip. So, it STAYS on my calendar!

We'll have to consider a side trek to Onyx Bridge => http://hikearizona.com/decoder=874 on the way to Pilot Rock...

@Randal Schulhauser
It is pretty much on the way. I don't see why not.

Sounds great, I'll be 100 % way before then. I am looking forward to getting out with other HAZ hikers.

I'm getting my hiking feet back, so now it's just a matter of getting time off from work, which should not be difficult.

Really into this one, Rob- it's been to long since I've been on the trail with ya! It's a trip I've actually tried to do several times, but always run into either weather problems or a scheduling problem.

So far I'm the only gal who's signed up. As most of you know, this isn't an issue for me. However, Wendy, I sure would enjoy hiking with you again!

Well their are more on the interested list. Now I don't plan on spending the night. So I will be hiking back out of course it maybe dark which will give me a better chance of taking a picture of Bigfoot.

I'd go in as "interested", but I really have no idea what my schedule will be.

I think you're more likely to run into Sandfoot out there...

Rob: While Mike has your attention I must say I am not sure if I can go. I may have some conflicts due to work. However, I am going to try to hash it out with my boss.

@te-wa Water cache not a bad idea IMO.

I'm going to have to pass :( It turns out I have a surprise birthday party to attend. Normally, I wouldn't pass on a hike for a birthday party but the surprise party is for me :-$ :lol:
