Junipine Fire update #2

Flagstaff, Ariz. – Firefighters are feeling optimistic about the Junipine Fire. The size and stayed relatively the same, and is mostly smoldering. Today’s high winds have inhibited helicopter work, but crews on the ground are continuing to hold. Containment remains the same.

The public should expect to see an increase in smoke from the area, however, as a pocket within the Slide Fire has rekindled and is actively burning in the West Fork area. Fire managers are monitoring its behavior and do not expect any significant movement because it is well in the interior and surrounded by burned area, but smoke will be noticeable. It’s not uncommon for pockets in the interior to continue to smolder and burn for several weeks. The increase in activity is due to winds and is not related to the Junipine Fire.



Junipine Fire Facts:

Behavior and Location: Junipine area in Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona. Fire activity burned north toward the blackened area of the Slide Fire, but in an area south of Junipine that had not previously burned.
Size: Approximately 12 acres.
Containment: 25 percent
Location: Originated just south of Junipine, approximately 5 miles north of Sedona.
Date Reported: Monday, June 16 at approximately 3:15 p.m.
Cause: Under investigation. Preliminary reports indicate cause is a downed powerline, but this has not been officially confirmed yet.
Current Resources: Approximately 60 to 70 personnel including one patrol, several firefighting crews, one air attack, four engines, one water tender and Sedona Fire. Two Forest Service engines and one Sedona Fire engine will stay on scene through the night.
Injuries/Structures Threatened: None reported at this time.
