FARMINGTON — An evacuation order has been issued by the Navajo Nation Police Department for the entire Naschitti community, according to an announcement by the Southwest Area Incident Management Team 3.

The evacuation order was issued Monday afternoon for all homes and schools within the community, including the chapter house.

Officials are asking for residents to follow all evacuation instructions issued by the tribal police.

Smoke from the Assayi Lake Fire, which is burning on the Ch'ooshagi Mountains in the Bowl Canyon area, continues to be carried into the community by high winds.

The population of Naschitti is 301, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

They are saying it is about 2000 acres too.... And Per SWCC: Black Mesa, Blue Ridge, Ft. Apache, Globe, Mesa, Mormon Lake, Navajo, Payson, Prescott, Gila, Mt. Taylor, and Zuni IHC's now assigned. Said the area is ripe for a major fire....

I've been following this because of the Navajos we work with. Seems already many have lost their family summer homes. These are not like getaway cabins but hogans and homes built by family members for summer sheep grazing. Some of these homes have been in families for generations.

This is really cool..One of the biggest concerns is all the folks whose livestock are up there for the summer grazing. Well the Navajos of course are not allowed in and many are fearing their cattle and sheep have spread far and wide or worse. Yesterday they all got news that one of the things the firefighters have been remarking on is how awesome the herding dogs are up there acting on their own to keep all their groups together and keeping them out of harms way. Is this cool or what, the only herding my cattle dog does is me in the kitchen. :D

This was posted this morning on the Assayii Lake Fire Facebook Page
A concentration of livestock has been found near the fire. The Navajo Nation Emergency Operation Center is working with firefighters to set up safe escorts to feed and/or transport livestock. If you or someone you know would like information about retrieving livestock, contact the Emergency Operation Center at 505-371-8406.

Mrs. big_load laughed at me because they Navajo dogs were so good at herding my car as we drove across the res. Once they realize you're not going to run them over, everything goes their way.
