Sign-in Boxes
I saw an old hike description I wrote where I reference a trailhead sign-in sheet and box. I don't think I have seen any in the Coronado, or the Lincoln, but I remember them a lot around Flagstaff. I can't recall either way in other National Forests. Do people sign those things? and Why? I know I did when I first moved to Flag, but stopped long ago.
For that matter, are the sign-in boxes still around? I guess the Humphrey Trail still has one, but what about Elden, and many other trailheads?

I always sign in as I always stop to read the names to see if I recognize any HAZ members. I sign in on even very popular trails just as a way to "Say Hi" to HAZ members that may see my name .

Re: Sign-in Boxes
I get the feeling that in rather remote areas such as the Blue--anywhere in the Alpine Ranger District--they really would like you to sign in and out. They'd like to know how many people are in there if they have to go looking for them due to a fire, for one thing.

Re: Sign-in Boxes
As someone who relies on survey data for some of my academic research, I definitely support the cause and sign in when I can. Besides assisting in search efforts, an additional benefit of these data could be to track usage/visitation of areas, which may have an impact resource allocation for facilities, services, etc (at least I assume this is an additional use...could be wrong). Of course, voluntary response has its inherent issues, but I'm sure the managing agencies have someone tracking this. Or...I could be over-thinking this

@sbkelley
Being that they cannot keep working pens and pencils with the sign in books suggests to me that you are correct and that you are over-thinking this. :-({|=
However my experience within SAR is that we do read the sign in and sign out logs when responding to a callout.
