I have been to Charliebois 4 or 5 times. Its about 17 miles around trip. With all the rain it should be pretty green,maybe a few snakes along the way.

Does anyone know the condition of FR78 to First Water TH? With all the rain, I'm afraid my poor little honda might not make it

Good question, but it should be alright by now. I have been there a few times after a storm and the road is usually grade within a day or two.

The humiditiy didn't hit us until we were on top of Bull Pass. Once we got down to the pass we thought about turning back, but also realized we would run out of water. And I knew there was water at Charliebois Canyon. So we had to take more breaks along the way.

Thanks everybody for your offers to help. Widowmaker turned up safe...the hike took longer than planned. Pinal Co Sheriff turned up at trail head and spotted them coming out to their cars. Glad it didn't turn out like his last adventure with a broken ankle. Y'alll are a good group of people! Nice to know there is help and encouragement out there.

If you get far enough along before the pace drops, the best move is to go for the spring. Some people don't make the best move when the chips are down, but I figured there was enough experience and judgment between the two of you to make the right call. My guess was that you would rest up by the water and hike out after it cooled off, or perhaps at the crack of dawn. If I were late, that's what I hope people would expect me to do. Of course, an immobilizing injury could change things considerably.

That's pretty much what we did. Filled everything up with water, including our cloths, bottles and stomachs and chilled out by the water for over a hour.

After about noon the thermometer I had on my pack never dropped below 100' and stayed around 110' for most of the day but like Larry said the humidity was the factor that was overwhelming. So we hiked in short spurts .25 to .5 mile then would stop in shade for 15 to 20 mins to keep from overheating. I never really felt in danger but it was very uncomfortable. It just took way longer than either of us expected.

It is imperative for hikers and backpackers in this state to be prepared to assist the searchers by having the means or a device to let them know where you are and what your problem is. Without this capability you may be in for a long miserable wait for assistance from those wonderful folks in the bright yellow shirts and jackets.

Well just to make less stressful for family and friends. I will buy a Spot or something like it. Any suggestions?

Your wife was afraid that you were going to live up to your Hazopelli name.

Believe it or not, you'll get get different suggestions here from different people...

I've used a SPOT for 3 or so years. It's worked pretty good as long as you use the correct batteries. The model I have is real picky on voltage.

Never had to uncover either of the emergency buttons yet, but the "I'm OK" button gets pushed quite often when I'm running later than I had discussed with my GF.
I subscribe to the Breadcrumb feature so she can see how close I am to finishing or where to find where the body is located when I couldn't push the button.

Some like the PLB's. in lieu of the Spot.
