Suggestion

Post by sherileeaz »

After reading that Marlee thought I was on the hike and that someone saw her but didn't realize til later who she was, I thought we may like have a way to recognize HAZ members.

Wouldn't it be nice to have some sort of button, name tag, t-shirt, etc, with Hike Arizona and our HAZ member name on it or if not that, just a tag with our name so that we wouldn't miss out on meeting people from here? Just an idea. Even tho some of our pictures are posted here, we aren't always certain who is who. On my hikes, I plan to put some sort of tag on my backpack. I don't want to miss out on meeting someone from here. This is all part of the fun!

Good Idea sherileeaz, but this isn't the first time this idea has popped up.

For past discussion on HAZ member identification see:

http://hikearizona.com/dex2/viewtopic.php?t=656

Maybe this will be the impetus for you guys to come up with the final solution.
(my favorite is still the AZ flag bandana)

Identification ideas

Post by sherileeaz »

I hadn't seen that forum so didn't realize I was suggesting something that was suggested before.
I agree, let's ACT on it. Let's make a decision.
I'll post the idea in the General section.

Great idea. Sherileeaz: the reason I thought you were on the hike is because in the log book at the peak there was 3 names that signed in right before me. That is why on one of my posts I mentioned to "Sherry" that I did hike all 4 peaks (or the bottoms of them:) This was because one of the people wrote in the log how they loved Browns Peak so much they wanted to come back and do all 4! I thought "Sherry" wrote that -sorry for the confusion. I talked to AK for over an hour on the phone last night, and he corrected me, and said he thought he saw a Sherry in the log book right above the three in his group...coincidence.
I think the identification idea is great - I would be very pleased to know something good for all of us could be acted on to aid in future hiking ventures, prompted again by my epic story! As far me...VERY hard to miss - I'm the tall lady with the doberman pinscher!

Marlee, You mentioned canyoning in NM. I did one trip to the Gila with my brother and his girlfriend. We hit the catwalk and the SF hotsprings. I've done some research since then and see there are quite a few hot springs in the wilderness. Have you hiked to any of those and if so, which are the best? (best in this case means remote, rarely visited) Thanks.

Marlee, sorry to hear about the long endured mishap, but great to hear about the recovery!

As to the identification thing, there actually are some of us who have taken to the Arizona bandanna flag as the way to be identified as a HAZ'er. Just look around. The bandanna may be in the back mesh pocket of a Camelbak, around the neck of my Weimaraner, Zefi, or as a headband! It can be a neat way to run into people who you have a lot in common with.

Just think about the alternative outcomes in the aforementioned adventure had members of the two parties seen something so recognizable as the Arizona flag silk-screened on a bandanna...

By the way Marlee, a Dobi was my other choice when I was searching for a pup!
Dog is my co-pilot.

Allan,
For those of use that could not make it, would you tell us how the trip went for the rest of the group? How was the climb up the chute? How long did it take? Did you come back down the same way or did you take one of the alternates? How were the temps once you got to the saddle and the summit? Enquiring minds want to know!

Since you're going again in a few weeks I'd like to join for that one if you're again open to others joining your group.

Thanks,
Bill

Hey Bill,
Well other than the scare of what happened to Marlee, the hike itself was great. The chute was a piece of cake, not to mention the funest part of the hike. The weather at the top was a little warm with a slight breeze and swarms of ladybugs and people. We took the same route back down thru the chute which again was a blast. I'm thinking of getting a few friends together to do it again within the next week or two, but probably on a weekday (monday) to avoid the crowds. So if you want to take a chance and join our fateful trip, let me know.

AARON (not Allen)

The az bandana and patch are now going to be part of the hiking attire. Along with better communication on the organizers part as far as phone numbers for unforseen delays and not depending on the forum or e-mail.

Aaron (not Allen, sorry :) , Matt,
I'm available during the week. And thanks for the summary Aaron. It's always interesting to read how different people characterize the same trip.

Browns Peak 5/31

Post by Billy »

Matt,

You will love the hike to Browns Peak, it is beautiful :) If you get the chance to go with Aaron and his friends during the week, it should be that much nicer going up and down the chute with less worries of sending debris down onto other hikers
