What are these different presentations about?
Big Water Little Boats
Local author, Tom Martin, recounts the voyages of a number of unsung river
runners during the transformation from Grand Canyon expeditionary river
running into today's whitewater recreation. The program includes original
photographs and film footage from various 1940's-1960's river trips. The
program will be followed by a book signing of "Big Water, Little Boats:
Moutly Fulmer and the First Grand Canyon Dory on the Last of the Wild
Colorado River" with proceeds benefitting the Friends of the Phoenix Public
Library
From Powell To Power
Otis "Dock" Marston first ran the Colorado River through Grand Canyon in
1942. Marston went on to participate in the first motorized down-runs and
only up-run of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. Local author Tom Martin
will discuss the book "From Powell To Power, A Recounting of the first 100
River Runners through the Grand Canyon." The program will be followed by a
book signing of "From Powell To Power" with proceeds benefiting the Friends
of the Phoenix Public Library
Day Hikes from the River
Join author Tom Martin as he describes some of the 100 hiking adventures
available from camps on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park.
Photos from Bass Camp, Hell's Hollow, Parashant and Cardenas will be shared.
The program will be followed by a book signing of "Day Hikes from the River"
with proceeds benefiting the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library.
DamNation Film Screening
This powerful film odyssey across America explores the change in our
national attitude from the pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the
growing awareness that our future is bound to the life and health of our
rivers. "DamNation’s majestic cinematography moves through rivers and
landscapes altered by dams to explore the conquest of the natural world.
Local author, Tom Martin will lead a discussion after the film and answer
questions.
Each presentation will be followed by a book signing with book sales
proceeds to benefit the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library!

I was on a Grand Canyon river trip with Tom Martin a few months ago, among other contacts I've had with him. He's an interesting fellow. I would think these presentations will be interesting.

I stopped by Burton Barr tonight after Squaw. Good presentation. Tom's a character! Recommended if you're interested in the boating history along the Co or just GCNP in general. I enjoyed it even though I'm not a boater. About 20 people there. Some boatmen from back in the day in attendance.

Well, you could become a boater! But it will cut way into your hiking time and your budget. You might have to figure out how to retire young.Dave1 wrote:I stopped by Burton Barr tonight after Squaw. This past August I had occasion to help Tom as a "gofer" for the first day of his filming of the 1902 Toledo Steam Car trip to Grand Canyon. As detailed in her following article, Amy Wang of the Arizona Republic was there, plus Jay Leno's steam car mechanic. Since it was monsoon season I held an umbrella over Tom as he filmed, and ran back and forth to help him with various tasks. He and I had to be far ahead of the rest of the entourage, because he wanted only the steam car in the film, of course, and not all the new cars in the group. (Unfortunately I could not make it to the second day of the filming.) http://www.azcentral.com/story/life/az- ... /14659073/
I don't know how I landed this particular volunteer job--right place at the right time. In October I rowed a lower GC trip that Tom was also on. I don't know him well, but it was fun to get acquainted. One more odd thing, a coincidence: The steam car mechanic (Jay Leno's mechanic--read the article), Arnold Schmidt's family and my ancestral family are buried in the same tiny rural cemetery in San Pasqual Valley near San Diego. Our ancestors were neighbors. So, at lunchtime we traded stories. The rest of the time he was fixing the steam car and I was holding the umbrella over Tom's head. What a great day! I only wish I had been able to go back the second day, when they arrived at Grandview Point.

Damnation is now on Netflix. My favorite portion was the segment with Katie Lee; first, because is shows some of the beauty of the (now lost) Glen Canyon, but more importantly one gets to see/hear a little more from that outspoken gem of a gal.
