Catalinas Water availability

Post by The_Dude »

I am planning an impromptu backpack trip this weekend, and I wanted to see if anyone might have recent water reports from the area I am looking at. I was planning a counterclockwise loop from the Sabino Canyon Visitor's Center, up Sabino to West Fork, then over on the Cathedral trail to the Window and back down the Esperero trail. I know I can fill up at Hutch's Pool, but is there any decent water source between there and the intersection of the #25 and #26? I was hoping to camp somewhere right about that intersection, so if I can avoid having to lug extra water from Hutch's pool that would make my life easier. Thanks!

I don't think there is much water between Hutch's and back to Sabino lower. 1 month ago I saw a very small trickle mid-way or so up the Esperero but it might be gone. There was a small puddle to filter from.

@Jim_H
Thanks for the quick response Jim. That is about what I was figuring, so I will be doing my best camel impression and loading up at Hutch's pool. Looking forward to it, temps should be great up in the high country!

On April 12 we got some water at a spring about 5 minutes from Cathedral Junction. I don't know where it was though as I didn't get the water as someone was kind enough to fetch it for me.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
