Re: Obama Changes Peaks Name To "Denali"
It's the right move. When I was up there everyone called it Denali. The only time I saw it referred to as mt McKinley was on various signs within the park.

Makes sense. Alaska changed it to Denali already. They were pushing to get the feds to follow suit.
Ohio already gets to choose every actual president-- leave geographical names to somebody else.

I lived in Alaska from 1970 to 1972 (US Army, Fort Richardson) and don't ever recall hear it being called Mount McKinley, just Denali.

Interesting, because that shows it's not a recent thing for non-Natives to call it that.
Interesting, also, once again, (just like in the marijuana debates), the Republicans are all for states' rights except when they don't like what the state wants.

I lived in Alaska for 12 years. Never once did I hear a local call the mountain anything other than Denali.

I am not sure what the big deal is. I lived in Alaska 3 years and it was always called Denali. And as far as the people of Alaska it has and always will be Denali. And to be honest here it is still Denali to me I don't need a president to tell that.

Not to change the subject, but living in Alaska for a summer seasonal job is on my bucket list. No winters, thank you. I'm gettin' too long in the tooth to deal with that!

Re: Obama Changes Peaks Name To "Denali"
Not too many climbers on the mountain referred to it as "McKinley" either. In fact, you were judged pretty hard just for uttering the name of the 25th president. Everyone in Talkeetna - resident and visitor alike - had a similar reaction.
