Grand Canyon, Ariz- At approximately 5 pm on Friday, August 28, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a satellite phone call reporting that a man had fallen while hiking the Fence Fault Route near Colorado River Mile 29.

The hiker has been identified as Daniel Sarr, 51, of Flagstaff, AZ.

An investigation is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner. No further information is available at this time.

HAZ has friends "writelots" and "mikehikes" on a non-commercial river trip right now, and I know they were in about that area on that particular day. According to other info, a river trip called in the emergency. Mile 29 to 31 has some popular camps used for first or second night on oar trips.

According to info on the internet, Daniel Sarr was a research ecologist for the USGS in Flagstaff. Here is his work profile and a photo of him: https://profile.usgs.gov/dsarr

Anyway, it's a sad thing to happen.

That is a Shame...And he probably wasn't on a Vacation...This may have been Work Related, judging from his Profile.... The GC Claims an Environmental Professional..... :(
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming, "Wow What a Ride!"

Your guess was right. This was work related.
A hiker who fell to his death in the Grand Canyon Friday was a researcher with the U.S. Geological Survey's Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center in Flagstaff. Daniel Sarr, 51, was a research ecologist at the center.

@ddgrunning
Fence Fault is off the North Rim side at about mile 30.5. If you look at a topo on HAZ, find where South Canyon comes into the river. Look upriver a half mile or so and you will see two washes running into the river from the North Rim side. A little further upriver is a third wash. This wash, whose angle is NE-SW, is Fence Fault.
