Water purification?

Post by johnnyo979 »

On the Appalachian Trail I used ultraviolet light backed up by drops to purify my water. Someone suggested that I need to filter it to improve the taste on the AZT. How important is it to filter the water? If so will a Sawyer Mini work which is what a lot of people on the Appalachian Trail use. Or would I need a bigger filter? I'm concerned that ultraviolet light might not work if there is debris in the water. Are drops sufficient with debris in the water?

If going with a Sawyer, I'd likely suggest the regular Sawyer Squeeze over the Mini for the sort of water you're going to encounter. It doesn't clog as rapidly or require backflushing as frequently and the flow rate of the Mini decreases pretty quickly between flushing vs. the Squeeze. I carry a Mini in my daypack, but a regular Squeeze (or pump filter, depending on circumstances) backpacking. I would also suggest pre-straining it when possible through a bandana, unless it's a particularly clear source.
