GC weather at the River first week of June/Bright Angel

Post by JasonCleghorn »

I am planning a Grand Canyon Bright Angel to river and back up(not R2R) and other GC stuff depending on your interest, the first weekend of June as well as a couple peakbagging side trips along the way, specifically Red Butte and some others, maybe even Humphreys on the way up...

I'm certainly not a noob, but by the first week of June, what will be the temps be at the River as I start my ascent back up Bright Angel? I'm certainly desert adapted, and a water buffalo that drinks a ton of water, etc, but I am A. looking for folks that want to go, B. but also to hear from folks that have gone at that time of year.

The inner gorge at that time of year in the grand canyon can be anything from 100-115. What ever the predicted temperature in the Phoenix area is about what it is in the bottom of the canyon. One year my husband did rim to rim in mid May and went over from south to north and was 100 that day but the next day it got up to 118 so he opted out not to go back across..

@Jason Cleghorn
A. looking for folks that want to go, B. but also to hear from folks that have gone at that time of year
So the right answer is stay away from the bottom of the canyon in June, but it is doable and just takes a different type of person and tons of precautions. I did five days in the bottom of the canyon during the same time period and although I was never close to death, it was certainly no walk in the park...http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=30644

I believed I described it as living on the edge of sanity and hell along with it being "Africa Hot." Going down BA in June prob not a complete death sentence, as there will be water at various spots and it is a sidewalk, however, I would still shoot for a very early start and choose your hiking partners wisely...its been done plenty of times before, just be smart about it..

Well :pk:

I have a three week window the last week of May to the second week in June. They're going to Florida for three weeks and I'm staying here.

how about the North Rim?
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Generally an ideal time to climb Humphreys. Usually even a little snow left. Maybe not this year though.

Both of my times doing that route (BA to the river and back) have been in the first two weeks of June. It was hot both times, 100+. We started just before or after sunrise both times. It didn't really bother us too much (just accustomed to hiking here in the valley during the summer) but it definitely is relentless coming out of the canyon. Both times I had issues on the way out. The first time was not eating enough, the second was due to a strained hamstring (that happened a few weeks prior) cropping it's ugly head around 3 mile rest house. That was a fun final few miles.

And I am notorious for not eating enough while hiking, camping so that would be bad for me. I do, however drink plenty of water, etc.

Sounds like I want/need my first experience in the GC beyond Mather Point (LOL) to be slightly more optimal. I'm mentally tough but I want to have my bearings, better.

Oh well.

You've been peak bagging a lot this year. If you start at 3:00 or so in the morning you could do Cactus to Clouds. Think JJ & I did it about the end of May or early June.

Will add Humphrey's to the list. I want to do the Weatherford/Kachina this year, so maybe we can hit that one together.

@SpiderLegs
JJ has done it in both June and July!

Probably in all 12 months now that I think about it...

You can do it in June, if you are this guy.
This is still goes down in my book as the craziest R2R2R -> http://hikearizona.com/trip=63444
There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

This was before my time on the website. Sounds like something JJ would do.

If you can get away, take a road trip for some peak bagging in Colorado or New Mexico.

I have a friend that lives in CO, I might do that. I have a goal of a couple of the 'easy' 14'ers for this summer.

Depending on the year, there can still be lots of snow on most 14ers the first weekend of June... July is usually considered when 14er season starts.

When I lived in Idaho the 4th of July was considered the beginning of peak bagging season for anything over 10,000 feet or so. Tried to bag one small peak in June near Boise and ended up turning around after post holing for 3 hours in the snow.
