Long article but well worth the read. How a kid from a Montana trailer park and some laundry detergent from Wal-Mart overturned 150 years of settled science. Lichen are much more complicated than science had imagined. And we might discover new medical treatments from this research. Isn't science and discovery wonderful?

This is a very interesting story. I think the article could have taken a better angle by portraying this work as unlocking important and previously unsuspected aspects of lichens which shows how the previous understanding was incomplete. Showing it to be incomplete is an important distinction from "overthrowing" it as the article's first paragraph states.
