More than 2,500 athletes from around the globe are scheduled to compete in the 13th annual Ironman Triathlon this Sunday, Nov. 20, requiring several roadway and ramp closures in the East Valley.
Ten miles of State Route 87 near Fountain Hills will be restricted to accommodate cyclists and aid stations.
SR 87 be narrowed to one lane in each direction from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday between McDowell Road and Shea Boulevard. North- and southbound drivers will use the northbound lanes while cyclists compete in the southbound lanes. Drivers should use caution and obey posted signs and speed limits.
Additional ramp restrictions are scheduled from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday for the marathon portion of the event. Use detour routes and watch for runners in the following locations:
The east- and westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) Scottsdale Road off-ramp will be restricted, with no southbound access. All drivers must exit northbound Scottsdale Road. Detour: Eastbound drivers can use the Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and westbound drivers can use Priest Drive.
The eastbound Loop 202 off-ramp at McClintock Drive will be restricted, with no access to southbound McClintock Drive. Drivers should use the Loop 101 instead.
The McKellips Drive off-ramp will be closed from northbound Loop 101 and restricted from southbound Loop 101. Drivers should consider an alternate route, such as McDowell Road.
Note: Several local streets in Tempe will be restricted or closed because of the event.
