Might as well go for the all time record that day! I remember when we hit 122 ... even had the t shirt.

Re: Mindless weather chit chat
I thought we hit 119 or 118 last year?
http://w2.weather.gov/climate/index.php?wfo=psr
You can get to it through the NWS page linked, and it was 118 last June. I'm just glad I didn't hallucinate that!
Click monthly weather summary, archived data, scroll to June 2016 and it read the report.

I never got the t-shirt, but I did win a bike race that day. Tuesday night criterium at South Mountain. I was totally wasted after that effort.cactuscat wrote:Might as well go for the all time record that day! I remember when we hit 122 ... even had the t shirt.

Am I the only one not surprised by any of this?

Re: Mindless weather chit chat
I remember 122 very well. I was 10 years old, and I think every kid in the neighborhood was playing outside that day (I know I was), because we all had to play outside all day, every day during the summer. I'd hate to think what our parents' water bills were, because we basically left garden hoses running about 10 hours a day.
Stop crying and just go do the hike.

Re: Mindless weather chit chat
Cool stat (pun intended
). Until last June's hot spell, there was a span of over 20 years where neither PHX nor TUC reached or eclipsed any of their top three temperatures.
The forecast looks promising, but I'll wait for the official readings to come in next week.

Re: Mindless weather chit chat
@SkyIslandHiker
I remember that day in Tucson! If you held your arms out in the sun you could feel the sunburn happening right away, and watch it happen, too! At the pool you had to stay in the water, because when you got out you were dry and hot within a couple minutes. We had an old car with no A/C. It was a challenge to go to the store. Had to bring some towels to drape over everything while we went in. We took it all in stride. The swamp cooler kept our old single-wide mobile home reasonably comfortable. Although I wanted to spend all day at the pool with the kids, I had to be careful they didn't get completely scorched.

The cicadas have been singing the past week on the North half of the Tonto which usually (hopefully) means the monsoon arrives shortly.

@Nighthiker Well since the monsoon started yesterday, I'd say those little buggers are pretty much right on schedule!

At the Giant Station at the North end of Payson this late afternoon a cicada started singing. Someone asked me what it was and told him it was a timber rattler seeking a mate
. He jumped back in his car and drove off.

Re: Mindless weather chit chat
I can't stop being surprised by the number of grown people who fear cicadas.
Apart from a couple short heat waves, it's been cool in NJ. It's a rainy weekend, which means the yard goes another week without mowing.
