Which Cabin Loop trail?

How long does the whole thing take? Which for a 1 nighter? Is there a lot of water for refill?

Is going north going to be up and south down? I like to have an easier way home

In general, on the Cabin Loop, going north is down an going south is up. Both N & S tend to be easier since you are walking along a ridge. Going east or west is the harder part since you are crossing several drainages (need to go down then up to get across each one).

Switch the layer to FS 2016 so you can see the roads

Then zoom into the beginning and ending of trails

Horizontal Numbered roads are best in high clearance vehicles when dry.
- on the above map they are solid alternating white/gray road lines

Vertical Numbered are 4WD
- on the above map they are solid white with tiny black dashes outlining

You can access these trails anywhere they cross a road. If you drive a sedan, best to stay on FR300.

..and please do post after your return. I do not recall when you said you were going to do this overnight backpack, but you should consider doing it relatively soon as from now- October and later the late afternoon temps drop fast and you will find yourself with some pretty cold nights and colder early mornings on these Cabin Loop Trails which are over 7200ft-7600ft elevations.

I recently hiked the whole loop skipping the "Huston Brothers" trail, stated at Washington Park and went north towards Fred haught trail, I completed the hike in a day and half , took plenty of pics , some rest breaks , i consider myself in good shape as i trail run frequently and on some of them elevations (theres a lot) i was getting winded lol, I ended up camping in Dane Springs for its reliable water source and good ground to set up my tarp, as others mentioned there are other water sources but they are standing water and i prefer spring flowing water , I suggest you take at least 2l of water from home.

They really need to mark the postings better along the 300 along the hiking area, got lost a couple of times , having to finally end up walking on the 300 road lol. Dont surprised with the elk calling for females all night as its mating season.

I did the Fred Haught trail and...
It was boring and not very pretty. There were just a few puddles of dirty water. I expected more. We got to some dirt road where it looked like it continued on but we had enough. Should I have kept going? How far do you think we hiked?

The best places for clear water on that trail are General Spring and Pinchot Spring. Had it rained recently? That's normally what would make the other sources muddy.
