If you are an AZ resident and have a good background check, the permit issued for visitors is now for 1 year; versus the 30 day deal they were doing.
Garden Canyon is looking to be about two weeks out for fall color. Maybe three red maples. I drove by some live fire today, the military guys get all the good toys.
Lots of deer. The road is open all the way thru the canyon, a little washed out but easy going.

Fall colors, military ordinance and un-hunted game, sounds like the holy Trinity of hiking happiness.

Re: Fort Huachuca Access 2017
Based on RedRoxx's report I went down to Fort Huachuca today and got my pass. I was there around noon and the only customer at the time, so I was processed very quickly. I started to fill out the form while the background check was being run, and the soldier said, "No need to fill that form out. Your are good to go." Amazing! He handed me my pass complete with my photo that I didn't know was taken! Good until December 5, 2018. Wow!
The more I go to Sierra Vista, the more I like the place. Intelligently laid out with smooth flowing traffic and friendly people. Plus, gas was 212.9/gal there, compared with 227.9/gal at my neighborhood station in Tucson.

@rwstorm
It's nice to hear something positive about Sierra Vista for a change. It surely is in a beautiful location, as I recall. I haven't been to the town itself in over 20 years.

Re: Fort Huachuca Access 2017
I was on a Southeastern Arizona trip last month. Love that whole region. 360-views of mountains are a real treat. Only being half-aware of the geography, I attempted to reach Sierra Vista from AZ 83 but turned around when I saw the guard shack at the west gate to the base. Thanks, @RedRoxx44. Now, I know better and will apply for that permit!
