Rattlers in the Supes

Post by rickcmarsh »

How active are the rattle snakes so far in the superstitions? I was hoping to take my kids (younguns) backpacking next weekend, but the drop in temperature has me wanting to stay away from the Rim.

Typically come Mid-March I avoid the supes, as an abundance of caution.

I have seen rattlers every month of the year. I wouldn’t skip a potentially fun trip just on the remote chance of seeing a rattler.
Stop crying and just go do the hike.

Agreed. I've seen several rattlers in my hikes, and have yet to come across one that could not easily be avoided. From what I've observed and read, the vast majority of folks who get crosswise with a rattler are doing something stupid (e.g., trying to catch/hold/kill it), rather than simply giving it a little berth and going on their merry way.

As to your question, the guy to ask is unquestionably @gummo.

There are plenty of rattlesnakes around the rim, but they're probably not out yet because it looks to be too cool. The picture is from June of 2009. [ photo ]
