summer water in southern az?

Post by jordan27 »

hi everyone, i'm in tucson, looking for some summertime water spots! it's kind of hard because my friend has a screwed up knee so i want to find a place for us to go that won't be too hard to get to...
somewhere maybe with some elevation that's a little cooler than Tucson, just a mellow spot where we can swim and hang out - any ideas?

Maybe Cienega Creek (county permit needed) or San Pedro River at Fairbank, near Tombstone. Neither one is at a high elevation, though. I don't think you can swim at Rose Canyon Lake in the Catalinas. Otherwise, all the swimming holes, IF they have much water, require hiking. Tanque Verde Falls may be shortest hike, but I have no idea if it has any water. You are asking this question during the worst drought most of us have ever seen. On the other hand, Tucson has many fine public pools.

Can you swim at Parker? I know Patagonia has a beach.

IDK if there's a beach at Parker, but as for swimming I know it's been done.

anyone got any idea what's the best place to go in cienega creek? any areas with a little deeper water? i've only ever gone down there from the parking lot by the train bridges and walked around a little; the water's pretty shallow there, but i'm pretty sure there's better areas.

Sabino Tram is good for people who aren't able to walk far. But right now I don't know if any of the swimming holes (there are lots of them) would have water in them.

i just did a nice 7 hour walk down to hutch's pool and back from the old japanese internment camp (gordon hirabayashi recreation area)
plenty water in there and real nice swimming.
too far for my friend with the knee problem.
anyway, yeah, i don't know why there's so little information on cienega creek on hike az... i'm gonna go down there in the next couple days; never spent as much time as i'd like there.
