Best Northern Airport for the Arizona Trail

Post by gardener »

Can someone suggest the best (most reliable, cheapest) airport to use to get to the northern terminus trailhead? I would need to take a shuttle from there, obviously.

Thanks in advance,

Gardener

Probably Flagstaff, since flights from PHL to PHX to FLG are pretty affordable, and there are shuttles to the Canyon south rim, so maybe a north rim shuttle could detour to the northern AZT terminus. I don't know if there are commercial flights to Page, and the Utah Cities are in Utah.

I'd consider Las Vegas to be the most reliable and cheapest airport. It's an hour longer drive than Flagstaff, but an hour shorter than Phoenix. There may be more affordable shuttle options in northern Arizona than LAS and southern Utah though.

Presuming that the you (OP) is outbound from Philly (Home of the world champion Philadelphia Eagles) - Vegas and Phoenix would be cheapest for the long-haul flight - but from there you could consider Contour Airlines to Page (+/- $100-ish dollars) .
Likely the ground shuttle (Steve & Susan - Paria outfitters - Big Water, Ut.) could pick you up in Page. It's about 40-ish miles +/- to the T/H from Page.

I'll have to try that sometime! :D
FWIW, Contour operates 108 seats per week to PHX and LAS and receives a federal subsidy of $429.50 for each one. Filled or not. No wonder they can sell tickets to you and me for $49!

I just found a way to cut $2.4 million from the annual federal budget.
Stop crying and just go do the hike.
