GPS coordinates on summit bench seat
Someone made a very nice metal seat for the bench at the peak. The first set of numbers is clearly the GPS coordinates for Picketpost mountain. The second one is also GPS coordinates and it is has 6 digits of precision after the decimal point so it is intended to be a very precise location. I looked it up and it appears to be in a cemetery in Santiago de Surco, Peru. Maybe a specific grave site? Anyone know the history of this?

Re: GPS coordinates on summit bench seat
The bench seat is pretty new. There's also another memorial plaque up there now. Seems like people just love leaving stuff (and spraypaint arrows) up there lately.

Re: GPS coordinates on summit bench seat
What a Shame if someone actually removed all the seat slats just for that. That wasn't there in March of 2018. This was the original "seat" in 2012.

Re: GPS coordinates on summit bench seat
The seat slats broke "naturally". Presumably by being used too much, or simply being of an original construction that was never intended for the abuse it receives. There have been several replacements in the meantime, including a section of classic pool fence!

That's the one I sat on in 2012. I haven't been back since that I can recall.outdoor_lover wrote:This was the original "seat" in 2012.

@big_load
It still had the original slats in March of 2018. That was the last time I was there. I just don't have a Photo of it.

I wonder if there's somewhere nearby that has nice dated photos of it?outdoor_lover wrote:I just don't have a Photo of it.

It had all of its original slats in 2013.
The first slat was missing by July 2014.
Two slats were missing by Christmas 2014.
By December 2015, nearly half the slats were gone.
A year later, there were only 3 slats hanging on the left seat, and a skinny person could rest on a single butt cheek on the right seat.
By October 2017, the pool fence had been attached. [ photo ]
The pool fence remains in place today, underneath the new metal engraved seat cover.

@chumley
Ok, you win.
I was wrong about the "Originals". When I was there in 2018, it had slats, (apparently a Pool Fence) just not the same ones. When I hit the Peak up there on that trip, I was really distracted from a very close call, slightly injured, and my cousin was already sitting on the Bench. I just didn't scrutinize the slats and probably forgot at that point what the original ones looked like, since it had been 6 years. My bad.
Ok, you win.

Re: GPS coordinates on summit bench seat
I have seen several posts on social media over the last couple of days stating that the bench and mailbox are no longer on picketpost...I have not been up there so I can't confirm it, but...

They probably got tired of the publicity and removed themselves to a more secluded spot.

Re: GPS coordinates on summit bench seat
@DixieFlyer I’m glad someone finally removed that garbage. The new bench seat (the sign that says Picketpost with the coordinates) still seems to be there, standing up as a sign now. Given the ridiculous amount of mourning on social media right now, I fear that something even gaudier will be lugged up there as a replacement.
Stop crying and just go do the hike.

I have an alibi. Other than that, my legal team has advised against further comment.

If it was me, (or if I had an accomplice), I wouldn't have half-assed it and left any of it up there.

It wouldn't be that hard to just chuck it over the edge.
How many decades was that mailbox up there?

After reading that note-- I'm even happier someone stole that moron's mailbox. I hope it's in a particularly disgusting dumpster somewhere.

Is there still a mailbox on Aylor's? Maybe that's where the Bench went....

Re: GPS coordinates on summit bench seat
@astrobrewer
A moderator in a popular online hiking group who is from Lima, Peru asked publicly for the dimensions of the bench, and in December 2018 the memorial bench seat with coordinates of a cemetery in Lima, Peru was placed as part of the seat repair. The group professes to educate new hikers on the principles of Leave No Trace. To date, the Peruvian moderator has not confirmed ownership of the bench seat nor identified who in the Lima cemetery the bench seat memorializes. It could be coincidental.
Interesting stuff though.
The new wooden plaque appears to memorialize a Superior resident who died last year.
