Mangum Fire
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming, "Wow What a Ride!"

6/12/20 @9pm
Effective immediately, Grand Canyon National Park has temporarily closed the North Rim until further notice due to the Mangum Fire near the park. The Mangum Fire is located on the Kaibab National Forest and is not within Grand Canyon National Park at this time.
The Mangum Fire began on June 8, 2020 and is estimated at 2,238 acres with 2% containment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. High southwest winds and low relative humidity have increased fire activity over the last several days and is predicted to continue through the weekend. The fire is being suppressed utilizing a full suppression strategy, using tactics that minimize impacts to important values at risk.

Re: Mangum Fire
I have been watching this one close up for the last three days. It’s funny as I hiked out on Friday, I said to myself dang that fire looks like it’s got bigger and it’s windy. For the last few days you could literally drive within a couple miles of it. Apparently, not anymore,

Now at 11,000 acres and Highway 89A is now closed from Cliff Dwellers to Fredonia. Highway 67 to the GC is also closed. Kaibab NF's FB Site shows some pretty vivid Photos. Here's the Forest Service Closure Orders for the area as well.

Re: Mangum Fire
@Jim_H I can ask, I think on way to Jacobs Lake. My friend drove up Friday not knowing about closure yet, had to turn around.

Re: Mangum Fire
@Jim_H Curious if you know about the semi controversial Jacob-Ryan forest plan up there? I guess they cut a bunch of the large trees out of there and left a bunch of small ones behind, they claimed it made the area more scenic and that the larger trees had created green tunnels. I am still reading up on it, but it seems the strategy of taking the larger trees out of there and leaving smaller ones behind did not work.

@friendofThundergod
I had never heard of it. Looks like it was 8 years ago, when was on the Reservation and around the time I started doing everything in my power to leave for the weekend. How did you hear of it?
I can't see what is going on up there right now, but depends on what got left and how it looked.

Re: Mangum Fire
@Jim_H It’s actually called the Burnt Corral Project now and there was just a public comment period for it, other than the dry FS plan, I just keep finding opinion pieces against it.

Re: Mangum Fire
Ah, OK. I don't really pay attention to the north rim, so maybe that is why. Knowing almost nothing about it, it is hard to form an opinion.

looks like pretty standard stuff. Seems reasonable. Even if a large number of old trees get harvested, it isn't like they live forever. Some of this stuff would be nice if it wasn't a total tax payer loss.

Re: Mangum Fire
Occupants along House Rock road told to leave, north of 89A; House Rock road is now closed to Utah line. That area includes of course the Wave, et al. and various ranches. So if you have a Wave permit, hiking the Buckskin might want to check in. Might still be able to go in from the north, not sure about that.

@RedRoxx44
Not all of them. A friend of mine lives on the corner of 89 and House Rock Rd. Not evacuated. The FS is setting up a temporary tank there, to create a sprinkler system.

Ya, that is from inciweb and several days old. They are just covering by making that statement; what happens on the ground is sometimes different.
