Hiking with kids
We have 3 kids age: 8,10,12. All three are year-round athletes but we’ve never really hiked before. Planning to do the “Ooh Ahh Trail” and ”Shoshone Point” trail. My question to y’all is if the Ooh Ahh trail is do-able for kids? My 3 are good athletes but born and raised in New Orleans… highest elevation are speed bumps.

Re: Hiking with kids
Shoshone Point wouldn't be an issue at all; easy peasy. Ooh ahh will be doable, too, easier for the older than the younger and it'll tire them out a bit, but it's not bad; kids do it all the time.

Re: Hiking with kids
You are below 8000 ft, which for most people does not end up being noticeable. I'd agree with xsproutx assessment. One thing to note is that I don't recall that "Ooh Ahh Point" is signed or anything, so there is a chance you could blow past it and end up continuing on down South Kaibab, so keep an eye on how far you've gone. Also make sure everyone wears reasonable shoes, don't do it in flip flops!

@nonot
Ha ha!!! No, flip flops! They all have good hiking boots. And they are all carrying their own day packs with water.

Re: Hiking with kids
It was definitely signed a month ago when I went. Even without the sign, it would be hard to miss as that is where all the people congregate. Just make sure you keep it Ooh Aah point and not Ooh Aaaaiaaiiiiiiiih point.

Re: Hiking with kids
When I was coming out on BA, a bunch of yahoos up near the top were screaming as if someone was falling or they had just seen someone fall. It was disturbing, especially since a 90 minutes earlier a very grim guy at Indian Garden was looking for a ranger to report someone in trouble.rcorfman wrote:Just make sure you keep it Ooh Aah point and not Ooh Aaaaiaaiiiiiiiih point.
As a point of reference, a couple years ago I was hiking in Scotland when someone around the next bend fell resulting in a serious head injury. The screams from that incident (I believe from the victim's companions), were quite similar to the sounds the yahoos were making.
