In response to heatherpeak's reply: A good website with lodging in the Payson area is http://www.rimcountry.com. There is other info on Payson and the rim there....

My experience is -- with a few notable exceptions -- is that cheap motels are often better than the expensive ones. So what if the carpet is a bit faded, the furniture's from the 70's, and the fixtures are from the 50's? Who cares if it's clean, the staff is polite, and the TV works? If it's $30 a night, who cares?
The two absolute worst hotels I've ever spent the night in have both been over $200 a night. One was in NYC and one was the Sheraton across from Universal Studios in LA. Both were ... disappointing. If a $59/night La Quinta in LA can provide me a free breakfast, free parking, free newspaper, and polite staff, you'd think the Sheraton could at least provide parking for less than $1/hour and breakfast that doesn't cost as much as a good steak dinner other places.
I digress ... anyway, cheap hotels are the best. You might look in the Christopher Creek area ... there's also a lot of camping that is free in that area.
