Water north of Peralta Trailhead

Post by jbullock35 »

I'll soon be heading north from the Peralta Trailhead, and I'm a little worried about water. I understand from a comment by @xsproutx that Charlebois and La Barge are currently reliable sources. But what about sources a little to the west—for example, Little Boulder Canyon, East Boulder (Weavers Viewpoint), East Boulder at Piñon Camp, or Barks Canyon?

Basically, I'm worried that I'll lack water in the second half of my trip, as I head south from Boulder Canyon back to Peralta Trailhead.

So we just had a couple of rain events and water shouldn't be a real issue if you're doing the trip fairly soon.
The water source labeled "East Boulder - WEaver's Viewpoint" at the junction of Peralta and Dutch will 99% have a ton of water (along with much of that canyon).
Piper Spring has water along Peralta.
Pinon MAY have water but it's not quite as reliable and doesn't have the same sort of rock structures that create nice deep potholes. It's not all that far from the other two sources, though.
For Bark Canyon, which are you talking about? The one a mile east of the trailhead? It'll almost certainly have water but it's close to the TH so probably not too helpful. In fact, a month a go it was listed as having "puddles" and it hadn't rained for 6 months and now we've gotten a few nice events.
There's a crossing of Bark's canyon on Bluff trail that usually has water. If it doesn't, you'll find some just a couple of miles north at bluff spring.

Basically, I wouldn't be all too worried about water. I would say Charleboi/Bluff Spring/Piper/La Barge/Second Water are 100% reliable right now. The rest I mention are highly likely. For the most part, you shouldn't have to carry water more than 5 miles and if your trip is soon, you'll likely find pools and pot holes with water all over the place.

Thank you, @xsproutx — this is really helpful, and it's good news. (I'll be starting out in just a couple of days.)

I agree with @xsproutx. We were out on the trail March 9-12. The first couple of days we found a lot more little sources of water along the trail in addition to the major sources like Brads Water, Charlebois, Bluff Spring, and Second Water. Then it rained pretty good the night of the 11th and there was water everywhere on the 12th. That'll dry up reasonably quickly, but if you're heading out in the next few days you should be good.
