Fall/Winter 2025 - Southern Tinajas Altas Mountains

Post by Howard70 »

For the last several years every winter we've spent a week or so camping, hiking & scrambling in the southern Tinajas Altas Mountains right along the US / Mexico border just west of the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Area at the western part of the Camino del Diablo. Always had a great time & saw nearly no one. We're currently planning this year's winter desert excursions and would like to return. The area we've previously visited is BLM land, but was under the jurisdiction of the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range (formerly Luke Air Force Range) and securing permits was straight forward and there were no problems. However with the recent changes in the "Rosevelt Reservation" we're wondering if a visit to the extreme southern range would be as enjoyable as in past years.

Has anyone been in that area since March/April of this year? I'd be curious to read your impressions.

Thanks,

Howard Snell

@Howard70 Not as recent as your request, but I spent a weekend in the area in January and it was the same as it's always been (though BP keeps improving the roads). The new permit process is also much easier than before. It's an enjoyable part of the world.

Fwiw, there is no BLM-managed land in that area. It is all straight-up military-managed!

The 60-ft wide Roosevelt Reservation should be easy for you to avoid if you have concerns about DoD vs DoI management.
I'm not sure what my spirit animal is, but I'm confident it has rabies.

Why couldn't they have timed the government shutdown just a little later? That's when to play on these sites!
