Heliograph
I had picked up a copy of Great Days of the Heliograph by Lewis Coe(1987) when it was first published and the book was very informative. I just received a copy of Lieutenants and Light by Robert E. C. Davis (2025) and this publication covers in detail of the Heliograph Networks in Arizona and New Mexico. So next time you are on a mountaintop and note the communication forest, likely the mountain top has been used since the early 1880's.
