Hellsgate overnight Jan 17th and 18th????

Post by pfredricks »

Okay, okay, so it aint a doosie, but it is alot of fun.
A little isolation, a little fishing, a great little hike, perfect camping spot and cool crisp air.

Now all we need is some good company.

This can certainly be done as a dayhike for those that dont want to stay.

I love this area!!

I promise not to get lost!

You know I'm in on this one Pete. Even If you get lost, I'll be right behind you this time. (If I can keep up!) I have to be at the Airport at around 6:00 PM on Sunday though so I may need to leave a little earlier than I'd like.

In response to pfredricks' reply: Since you put it that way, I'm in. Tell you what though, I'll make it easy on you and bring only a case of beer. I'll carry a twelver and you carry the other and I'll pack out the empties. Deal?

This does sound appealing though. A short hike in means a later start and lots of time to explore. Then comes the nighttime "anti-freeze" consumption function and not having to worry about getting up too early. Am I hittin the mark here?

Ok Gentlemen...if you don't mind your party getting crashed by a couple of women and a dog, count me, my girlfriend Anna, my roommate Chris, and my dog Bailey in on this one. We'll pack in and out more beer, etc.! I'm not positive yet I can make it with my bum knee I got from rock climbing a month ago  , but at the rate it seems to be going, it should be o.k. in two weeks. I'll keep you posted - if I can't make it, none of us will be joining.

And Aaron - "hi" back atchya from an earlier posting :)

hey all, I'll try and make this trip, since I missed Mother Lode... if I make it maybe we can carpool again. I live in Ftn. Hills. Cars would be safe at my house.

where/when to meet.

Post by pfredricks »

I was thinking of meeting at Denny's in Payson-like say 9AM
That way we could have a leisurly am start, have a big old warm breakfast before getting underway. Hit the trailhead by 1030-11am
2-3 hour stroll down to the confluence then the rest of the day could be spent exploring/fishing/chatting.
What are your ideas? I have a tent/stove/water filtration.
I dont think we need to bring 5 water filters and stoves.
I will carry all that though, if you want. Is anyone bringing those items?
Do you want to hike in from the Trailhead or from the end of the 4x4 road.
I prefer to hike it in. We could do either or both.
I will probably want to be back at the TH by about 1PM or so, so if anyone would carpool, I'd be happy to drive or ride.

I find that freeze dried dinners work best for groups, cause one stove can heat a bunch of water, then everyone just adds water and eats together.
Let me know your thoughts all.

Payson at 9am works fine for me. If i remeber the dennys is on the main strip. I live at 16th and Bethany Home (North of Camelback) if anyone wants to meet here and carpool to Payson.

I also have a stove and water filter. Neither weighs much so i will bring mine. I also have a set of titanium pots (four different sizes) which i will bring. Anyone is free to use any of these items.

As to the times in/out and the TH. I am flexible, makes no difference to me. If we want to go the 4x4 route, my car will get four people total through that.

Pete... two words.. Beeline Cafe! if you havent been, (you must not have)we could meet there. The food is fantastic, and I mean it. Cheap, too. (just like me  )

I dont have a filter, mine is too clogged and the store was out. What I get for buying the most popular filter in the world. oh well, maybe we can share.

the Beeline Cafe is just north of Big O tires (could be discount tires?) on the East side of street, across from the new movie theatres.

Im still up for meeting at the Wendys, or the Casino... whatever, lemme know your thoughts

The times sound good to me. I will be bringing my personal tent. I also have a small stove and a water filter. Although we shouldn't pack too much Pete, we're hauling in a twelve pack each!

If anyone is leaving from or coming thru Mesa, I'd like to carpool.

I don't have much for gear besides a tent and the usual daypack. I don't have a stove either, but if there is some food I can pick up for the group let me know. I haven't gone camping in years so let me know what the magic meals are. The Cafe sounds good to me but I'll let you guys decide where to meet. I got the thumbs up from Tom (Levi501) so he will be coming with me. I can take 2 more in my car if anyone wants to carpool. I need to be back in Phoenix by 5:00 PM though.

Howdy All,
This sounds like alot of fun. If there's room, I'd like to join in and meet y'all. I've got most gear except a stove and will be driving from Gilbert. I have room for one more and would be up for hiking the whole way or driving packs (loaded with beer, Beam, & Coke) up further. I'd like to be home by 3:00 p.m. if anyone is looking for a ride.

Slisk, you got Beam, you got a friend here!
See you at 9:00 in Payson!

I think it might be good for you to pick up Aaron (AK) in Mesa on your way...right AK?

BTW Aaron...I still have a pair of your 'AK' inscribed gloves I'll bring.

I'll be driving up with Anna, Chris, and Bailey (my dog) - we'll be at the cafe at 9:00.

Ok - this was going to be my posting until news just changed...My grandmother passed away today and I will be flying out to CA Wed and returning Saturday. And as I said before, Anna and Chris will not be joining this hike without me. Hope you all have fun, and I look forward to the next time.

Marlee-
Very sorry to hear about your Grandmother. Wish you could make it, but, we understand. Keep me posted.

Slisk 250-
It will be great to have you. We have a great group and sounds like you will be a great addition. I mean, hey, anyone that can talk about Krebs cycle and motorcycle that brings some JB is pre approved.
It will be a great time

I am starting to get excited about this.

hi there

Post by pfredricks »

I have been doing some research about the weather down there.
Looks like temps should be about low to mid 60's for the high
28-33 for the low.

Would have to be closer to the weekend to be more accurate than that.

perfect weather for fireside chat, antifreeze, fishing and sleeping
