Hellsgate overnight Jan 17th and 18th????

Post by pfredricks »

Okay, okay, so it aint a doosie, but it is alot of fun.
A little isolation, a little fishing, a great little hike, perfect camping spot and cool crisp air.

Now all we need is some good company.

This can certainly be done as a dayhike for those that dont want to stay.

I love this area!!

Join up for this awesome hike

I promise not to get lost!

Marlee, We'll raise a glass to you and your grandma. I wish you well.

Hey AK, if you need a ride like Marlee mentioned, that's fine. I also appreciate the weather forecast Pete. Somehow I don't think that a little cold would slow you guys down (after reading about the motherlode or Pete's last trip into Hells Gate)

Actually my best guess on weather is now
68high
low to mid 30's for the low temp.
It will probably be colder at the TH because that is on the rim, the campsite is well below that.
It is shaping up perfectly for us.
I would like a ride with you Brad-if that's okay with ya.

Let's meet at Beeline cafe. 9AM okay?

Where exactly is the cafe Mike? Is it south or north east or west of Mc DOnalds on the corner there in Payson.
If you want to carpool speak up. WHo is riding with whom?
Sounds like we have at least 2 four wheel drives so, we could consolodate into the 4x4's at the TH and drive at least part of the way into the forest-BUT we dont have to decide until we get there.
SOunds like we have enough stoves and filters. I guess everyone is responsible for their own cookware, seasonings, and tasty beverages and dont forget snacks.
I actually plan on a flask and three cokes as mixers
I may or may not bring a tent depending on last minute forcasts.

A bear bag is not a bad idea as we will be near the water.

ANy questions?

great. Im bringing the only girl! :o

when you enter the town of Payson, at the Casino, drive for about 1 mile and you come to an area that is obviously newer than that of surrounding buildings. On the left is a Chilis, a Stockmans Bank, and movie theater. The cafe is directly north of the tire shop on the right. (Big O, or Discount cant remember) but you cannot miss it. If you pass the Courthouse on Main St. you went too far. There is a "Beeline Cafe" sign and ample parking, although on a Saturday this place is jumpin! One of us will have to get there at say 8:30, there is only one table that seats 6-7. see ya there amigos.

Pete the weather man! I hope you are right. Although I just watched the news at noon and they are predicting a chance of rain on Friday. That might cool things down just a bit for Saturday, but not enough to keep me from going.

As far as a ride goes, I'll be carpooling with slisk. See you guys Saturday morning at the cafe!

Enjoy! Weather permitting we're doing Nankoweap this weekend. I tried once before but bailed at the TH and went home and booked knee surgery. All better now!

Howdy Y'all,

I'm all set to be @ the Beeline with AK after I get directions. I'm also wavering on the tent or just a fly. I figure that if I go light, it will then snow/rain but less weight = more antifreeze. I will bring no cooking equip except a spoon. All I need is some hot water if someone can hook me up. What is the projected flow rate since I believe we need to cross the stream to camp. Can we skip across or should I bother bringing some wet shoes? BTW, my 4X4 is a truck so if anyone wants to jump in the back to go a ways up the road, that is cool. It is very likely that I will want to park as close as possible so I can spend more time Sunday at camp and then blaze a trail when it is necessary. I have no set time, however, I want to spend some QT with the kids in the afternoon (3p.m. -5p.m.) Now if the fish are biting...

I checked the flow rates yesterday and it appears to be next to nothing.
That means it should be very easy to hop across. That of course, is not to be deemed 100% accurate.

Anyone know what kind of fish are in the creek? Trout, Catfish? Just wondering what kind of bait to bring.

I am going to bring a tent along but might leave it in the truck if the weather permits. Besides, I need to save room for the "anti-freeze"!

The guys at the neighborhood fishing store told me there should be trout in the Tonto. They suggested spinners and, like mike says right after me, powerbait.

I have a set of radios i will bring also. After my last few experiences i think those will be going with me on every hike!

Looking forward to this. Already packed and ready to go!

FISHING!!! I have two packable rods and will bring both if someone will need it. Otherwise it will stay home. I will also bring a chunk or two of some other powerbait colors for everyone but my focus will be small spinners and rapalas...unless the powerbait works. Feel free to use my stuff. I need to go get a new license and stamp since mine expired last week. I've got a pair of radios and a Geko to mark spots. A good point was made about the bear sack. I won't sleep with food but shouldn't Yogi be taking a long nap this time of year? I will sleep with my Beam.

In response to mikeinFHAZ's reply: The Beeline is right next to the Big O. On the right. You will also see a Pink and Green mexican food restarant right before the Big O. It might blind you and you may miss the Beeline. So don't be shocked by it!
