I'm taking my 8 year old on his second canyon hike and my six year old on his first. From past experience, I'm trying to avoid the heat of summer, and any major elevation change with kids. I thinking about a north rim hike that stays on the rim, but is still backcountry. The Widforss trail runs close to NG9 and NF9 areas which are at large, but they seem awful close to the lodge area. Are there any other restrictions on camping there?
Thanks,
Buck

this kinda doesnt add much to your query but I only know the Widforss is 5 miles long and has some cool old growth trees, with good views. From the crowd standpoint, you really have to want to make it that far unless you're from Utah or something.
Since you have growing children, check out the Deuter Fox 30 and the Vaude Mighty Mate packs, they are really cool for youngsters!

Hey Buck,
If you're lucky the zuma's or some other helpful sole will post up a decent answer. If not I'd call the park and just ask, they're pretty friendly. Phone numbers are listed in this article
