Flies in the Superstitions

Post by Nay_Nay »

I've been looking forward to hiking the Superstitions and thought I'd start out with the Hieroglyphics Trail for my first hike. BOY was I disappointed! Don't take me wrong, it's beautiful up there. BUT...... :x GRRRRrrrrrrrrrr.....There were soooooooo many darn flies!!!

Is this just a seasonal thing, or is it always like that? What about the other trails in the Superstitions? Are they infested with flies also?

Its that time of year. bug repellent and even a head net may be requred. Last week I camped at Canyon Lake Marina Campground and went for a night hike and ride on my mtn. bike. Lot of bugs were attracted to my head and bike light.

I agree with Shawn....it's really too toasty out there in the Supes. The Rim is much cooler and nicer this time of year!

In as many times as I've been in Supes during this time of year, I've never encountered a problem with flies on the Hieroglyphics Trail....only lots of bees swarming in the pools up by the petroglyphs. Was there a lot of stagnant water around? Or any water for that matter?

Thank you guys for your input! I guess I’ll wait until after summer to hike the Superstitions.

Yes, there was a lot of stagnant water, so maybe that was the reason for all the flies. It was really crazy though because at the end of the trail there were so many flies that I could hardly see at times…..YUK!!!
