Pinaleno's

Post by bryanmertz »

Hi Everyone - thinking of going to the Pinaleno's this weekend for some camping/ hiking/ fishing...

Just thought I would get your valued input and suggestions. Anyone know of a great secret camping spot along a creek somewhere?

Thanks;
Bryan

If you backpack anywhere along Ash Creek that is level is great. The fish in there are small, not sure about permits. Riggs lake is stocked with trout, car/tent camping all along there ( will probably be busy with holiday). Other small streams are up there, again not sure re: fishing.

Best car camping up there is past Riggs lake, some informal spots with excellent views. There are developed campgrounds also, fees involved, all along the Swift trail.

Have fun, a beautiful place.

In response to bryanmertz's reply: Did you make it to the Pinaleno's and if so any recommendations? Headed there in two weeks for the first time in years. I've heard Heliograph Peak trail just opened back up, but not sure what else was/is closed due to Nuttal fire damage.

Hey OldTimer - yes, we went up over the past weekend. We stayed at Shannon CG; which was suprisingly quiet for a holiday weekend. Both Riggs & Soldier were over flowing, and we didn't even have a neighbor.

I'm pretty sure all the trails are open again. It rained a little every day we were there! Sometimes a downpour, and others just a light sprinkle. We actually lost the Heliograph trail multiple times near the top from the fire damage. If you take your time and look for cairn's and the trail erosion logs, you should be fine.

I was pleasantly surprised for my first visit out here. It's a couple hours longer drive than Payson/ Flaggstaff, etc. But the remoteness is welcome.
