Ride description: An easy bike ride in the Flagstaff area following the Waterline trail from Shultz Pass to the Inner Basin of the San Francisco Peaks.
The ride will follow the Waterline trail from Shultz pass to Flagstaff Spring in the inner basin of the San Francisco Peaks.
The trail starts ~ ¼ east mile of the Shultz Pass trail head. The trail climbs gently for the first 11 miles to Jack Smith Springs (reliable water source). From here the trail steepens some for the last 1 ½ miles to Flagstaff Springs. After reaching the spring we will return via the route we came. The ride back will be easy and much fun being down hill the entire way. If bikers have the energy they can turn north after reaching Jack Smith springs, instead of turning south towards the trail head, and travel an additional 3 miles (one way) and 1,000ft gain to Abineau Canyon where the Waterline trail ends. This will lengthen the ride to ~ 31 miles.
Bikes can be rented at Tempe Bicycle for a 3-day rate of $50 + tax (480-966-6896), or from Bicycle Wheeler’s for a 3-day rate of 60 + tax (480-968-8011). There are other bicycle rentals, these happen to be two that I know of. There are also bicycle rentals available in Flag, but it is recommended that bikes be rented in the Phoenix. The rentals I’m aware of in Flag don’t open until 9:00 AM Saturday which would make for too late a start time.
Additionally, are various bikes for sale cheaply @ http://www.craigslist.com (choose Phoenix and then bikes)
