CAR camping, single night in the backcountry

Newbie poster here, and new to AZ as well (from flat Chicago).

My hiking buddy from Chicago is coming down in late Oct. and we are looking for a nice backcountry trip. Ideally, we are looking for something that allows backcountry camping, is fairly remote and rugged (ie, won't see the lights of Tucson in the distance), and of course, spectacular. A single night in the backcountry is all my time will allow for. Also, if there are beautiful/recommended CAR camping nearby, so we can make our travelling to-and-from the hike easier, that would be an added plus.

We are moderately experienced backcountry hikers, and would say in reasonable shape. Still, don't think I'm looking for anything I'm gonna need to rappel from...

Hi - The amount of drive time may be too much for a single night; but Aravaipa is worth it. You could camp near the TH Friday night, head in Saturday, and out Sunday. Weather should still be great in October too. This is one of my top 2 or 3 places.

You could also look at Secret Canyon area near Sedona.

Or, try Devils Chasm. There is some remote car camping available right at the TH.

Welcome to Arizona. The above are just a few that came to mind; there are endless options for you.

I recommend the Superstitions. They're close by, with more trip options than you can count.

There is a book, "Backpacking Arizona" by Bruce Grubbs - it has a bunch of TERRIFIC backpacks in it - most all are loops, allowing you to see more sights. (maybe the Library has a copy) Other than the terrific suggestions above, the Mazatzals come to mind. (some Mazatzal hikes are in the book).
A section of the "Cabin Loop" on the Rim might be nice, as would Taylor Cabin (near Sedona). I'm sure ideas from some others will be forthcoming.

Bryan is correct.....the possibilities are endless!!!!

I personally would recommend anywhere on the Mogollon Rim but it will be quite chilly there in October since it's at 7000+ elevation. I know a few really cool car camping places up there so PM me if you want my maps to these.

I would also think about Tony Cabin/Haunted Canyon or Reavis Ranch in the Supes. I have information on these two trails too.

Hmmmm. Ya know, I didn't even think of the Superstitions. And what more wonderful a place to spend Halloween.

I've never been there. How out-of-control do you guys think/know the crowds will be around Halloween? If its going to be like going to the mall, I may have to find another place....

I don't think it would be too crowded and there's tons of options on where to go.

Seeing that it's Halloween season....maybe HAUNTED CANYON????
