Someone told me ther is a website from which you can print topo maps+ I can't recall what it is. Anyone know??

Topozone seems like kind of a ripoff to me. The maps are pretty expensive to download as I recall. Then you have the issue of how good is your printer and what size can you print.

At Wide World of Maps you can get the original topos for probably less or invest $99 in TOPO! software by Nat'l Geographic which is really good (every topo for the whole state).

Somebody on this site long ago found a way to download maps for free off of a government site, but I don't recall what it was.

There's also http://www.maptech.com and http://www.trails.com/explore/maps.asp. Fritzski's right though, the best thing is to go buy the real deal, or get the Topo software. The government site may have been the Terraserver, a joint venture between the USGS and Microsoft, http://terraserver.microsoft.com/. Also check out http://mapping.usgs.gov/.

Printing an 8 1/2 x 11 map from topozone.com is free. It is convenient if you only need a small section. You only have to pay if you want to download an entire map.

I agree that getting the full map is best. Wide World of Maps sells them for $6 each, as does REI, though REI has a much smaller selection. You can also order them directly from the USGS website for $4 each, but there is a flat $5 shipping & handling fee, regardless of how many maps you get.

I bought the Nat'l Geographic Topo software for Arizona and I really like it. The shaded relief is very nice, different map scales and has a route fuction where you follow a route that you are interested in with your mouse and then it tells you the distance and gives you an elevation profile too. Break down and get it. You will have a blast playing with it and printing out maps for your adventures. You can also speak of "retiring to the map room."

I have a map room! I love the Nat. Geo Topo software, I find myself just exploring new areas and learning about the areas I frequent...I amaze myself with how much I know...and I scare myself silly with what I don't know...excellent $100.00 spent.

Got e-mail from Amazon.com while I was gone telling me Nat'l Geographic TOPO Arizona was on the way....Now all I gotta do is learn how to read maps;

I have a map room that includes a little over 700 USGS 7.5 maps and apx, another 100 in misc maps and I have been collecting public land maps (forest, BLM, wilderness, etc.) since moving to AZ in 67. Being left handed, I have an iMac computer. I recently checked out a topo map program that has most of the topo maps for Central AZ that I can utilize on my iMac though I still prefer the hard copy map.
