This is like drinking from a fire hydrant. Looking for hike with a 3-4 difficulty, not too far from phoenix. few hours out and back with great views. Any recommendations? Visiting from New Orleans for a few days.

This is an incredible site that has grown and keeps growing and changing. Thanks to the incredible webmaster Joe and many active and enthusiastic members. HAZ has added close to 3,000 new members in the last 3 months. Congrats Joe.

I looked through the FAQs and ARTICLES. I may have missed it, but it does not appear that anyone has taken the time to help new members with a tutorial. I don't have the time right now, but here is a brief attempt to answer your question and to help other new members.

A brief tutorial on TrailDEX for any new member.

1) At the Main Page go to TrialDEX
or Go to Hike Indexes and then to TrailDEX.
In TrailDEX
Go to Division, click on the drop down menu and find Phoenix, click on it.
Go to Wilderness, click on the drop down menu and find Superstitions, click on it.

Go to Difficulty, go to Skill, click on the drop down menu and find intermediate, click on it.
Click on Search Now

You will receive 4 pages of suggestions.
Go to Page 3 and look at Peralta Trail. Click on it for an in depth description. Back out to look at other hikes.

2) At the Main Page
Go the the Map of Arizona and place your cursor on Phoenix, click on it and be patient.
A submap will appear. Place your cursor over a subregion. I suggest Phoenix NE, Mesa NE, Superstitions NE or Superstitions SW.
For now, click on Superstitions SW.
Scroll down. A list of all hikes in that region will appear. Peruse the list and choose a hike.
Look at Peralta Trail or Hieroglyphics Trail.

Repeat for other subregions of Phoenix.

3) At the Main Page, if you click on the Dynamic Map, Static Map or Regional Map to the left of the Logo, submaps will appear. Use techniques similar to tutorial 2 to find hikes.

This is a quick explanation. Hope it helps.

If all else fails, you can always pick Camelback Mountain or Piestewa Peak. Great hikes right in Phoenix,

Great. If that hadn't worked I was going to tell you to do a keyword search in the forums.

Because of the reference to Fire Hydrant I was thinking about who would want a hike with Fire Hydrants. Then I remembered that there was a great discussion in the “Looking for a Hike” section on “Dog Friendly Hikes” : dog : :rollH:

I was desperate to peek someone's interest with fire hydrant subject. Just checked out Peralta Trail and we're going to do it. Ya'll have done an awesome job with this site and GPS stuff also! Come visit New Orleans if you're up for a real adventure of a different sort- I'm in disbelief daily. Looking forward to AZ.

Best source of hiking trail info on the net for Arizona from members who care & share! When y'all going to be here in the Phoenix area? Two 4-5 difficulty hikes (if it's not too late in the spring) are Flatiron or Picketpost but they are both pretty exposed so if the temps are too high, it can be brutal. The views from the top of each are awesome! Peralta trail to Freemont Saddle is a good one too and more of a level 3-4. First Water to Canyon Lake is a real nice hike....7.5 miles and I would say a level 3 with beautiful views of the Superstitions throughout.

BTW they have decent biscuits N gravy at a few local restaurants but I haven't found too many that have good grits. I'm still looking for some decent andouille.
