I'm fairly concerned about the big development that supposed to go in out at Twin Arrows. That place is a piece of Route 66 history, not to mention the beautiful isolation. And now, plans for some 6k homes!

It makes me very unhappy as well. Also, why would that type of person (the type that can afford to buy an expensive home) want to live in that area, which is either cold and windy or hot and windy or cold and snowing and windy? It just doesn't compute. There is not a lot of natural scenic beauty there, either, at least not in the conventional sense--it's really pretty bleak out there! I just don't get it. And they will have to dig deep wells, I should think, further lowering the water table.

Page Rob do you have links to more info on this? I also heard there is to be another such development over near Ash Fork. Had you heard that as well?

Brace yourself for much much more of the same. Developers run this state. There are plans to build THOUSANDS of houses in the Verde Valley and there is a three way battle between Prescott, Prescott valley and Verde Vally being waged right now over the Big Chino Aquifer, that feeds the Verde River. Developers are litterally sucking the Verde dry and they still are starting several major developments in the Cottonwood, Clarkdale and Camp Verde areas with no regard to the water (or lack thereof) issues. :x

I sent a letter to the editor regarding the "tri city area" in Prescott. In the Daily Courier they were worried about the lack of water and the developers over building. Choose your poison I guess. All that extra money coming in from the tax base is like a thirsty traveler in the desert, you just can't get enough! If enough people write the Yavapai County government maybe they will wake up before it's too late.

I don't have a link or anything, I remember reading something on it in the Flag paper earlier this year (Jan., maybe Feb.). The whole growth of the state is nuts. I like Page (and the surrounding area) so much because it can't grow. We're surrounded by so much federal land involved in Parks, Monuments, Rec. Areas, and Rez.

I hear all of you in Arizona and I feel your pain, believe me when it comes to growth. The realestate agent we are working with in Prescott wanted to know why we were leaving FL for AZ. I told her uncontrolled growth was one reason (the unrelenting hurricanes are the main reason) and she laughed! But what she and all of you don't know is that in Sarasota alone we get 300 people a week moving here! That was according to the newspaper. Now that my hiking friends is uncontrolled growth.

Developers are taking over both our states for sure (remember Kruschev, he said to the US "We will bury you") so they, the developers are really the main enemy here. But at least in AZ you have more protected lands than we do. Don't get me wrong i'm not moving to your state to add to your misery, i'm transferring with my job, one person leaves, I come in.

For your information, here is a Route 66 News blog with a reference to an Arizona Daily Sun article on the Twin Arrows situation.
http://rwarn17588.wordpress.com/2006/03 ... in-arrows/
Big Subdivision near Twin Arrows? March 3, 2006
A 660-home subdivision near Twin Arrows, Ariz., east of Flagstaff, was approved by the Cococino County Planning and Zoning Commission this week, according to the Arizona Daily Sun. The county board will get the final say whether this project proceeds.

Twin Arrows is a Route 66 settlement that has an abandoned gas station and two giant arrows stuck into the ground nearby. The arrows have fallen into disrepair. The story doesn’t make it clear whether the development would force the razing of the arrows or building.

There may be some hesitation on whether the county will allow this. There are anti-sprawl ordinances on the books, and it’s hazy on whether the development violates them. There is local opposition as well.

I’ll dig around to see whether I can find other details about this proposal.

UPDATE: I’ve been informed that the proposed development is north of the Twin Arrows site and Interstate 40 and thus would not affect it. However, my source told me it’s always possible that the Twin Arrows land south of I-40 could be commercially developed at some future date.
