What cell phone service has the best coverage in the Supes? Anyone have good/bad experiences they can share?

It looks like I may be breaking down and buying one of the horrible things. Mostly for emergency use, so having signal available in case of a hiking mishap is a big factor in what service I go with.

Not sure about any other services But I switched from t-mobile to Verizon for that reason(better coverage around the Supes). although I don't think you can expect to get signal once you go behind the mountain! I couldn't even get a signal (with t- mobile) on the flatiron looking over the valley. thats why i switched!

My friend got reception with Verizon on the Terrapin Trail long before I could get reception on AllTel.

In response to Nan's reply: All the wildland firefighters all use Verison. They have found the best coverage in the west at least.

Whatever service you use keep this in mind. One man calling from high in the eastern part of the Superstitions reached a cell phone tower in New Mexico. He was only calling a friend to brag about where he was and he ended up paying $35 in roaming charges.

This could happen to any of you calling from mtn peaks.

You have been warned.....

I use Verizon because I get more coverage in the state, however I have never brought my phone in to the Sup's, so I don't know if it will work there.

Just my opinion Nan, but I swear by Verizon. Received reception at First Water, Peralta and Canyon Lake THs, on top of Supes Peak and Flatiron too. Also got a weak but useable signal at Secret Canyon in Sedona.

Ham radio may be a pain in the neck to get the license, etc., and the hand held unit is expensive, but it works more places, and you don't get that pesky BILL in the mail every month! I have neither cell phone nor ham, but have seen handheld ham in action--very impressive. Bottom of Brown's Canyon in the Huachucas, in the trees--no cell phone would have worked there.
