Fires and Humphries

Post by jaybird »

I was planning to run up to Flag for a day and hike Humphries. Anyone know if the current fire situation has closed the trails around Humphries? I couldn't find anything on the FS web site so I'm assuming they're open.

In response to jaybird's reply: The fire is on http://gacc.nifc.gov/swcc/predictive/in ... 06_003.jpg Not any where near the peaks.

Flagstaff fire update

Fire update

Firefighters have line around the Woody fire which burned 150 acres, caused the evacuation of hundreds of residents and threatened 300 homes, 12 businesses and 50 other structures on the western edge of Flagstaff city limits Wednesday afternoon.

Fire officials said mid-morning that firefighters got the upper hand on the wildfire Wednesday night and began mopping up Thursday morning. Evacuated residents were being escorted in by law enforcement to gather medicines and check on pets that were left behind. Officials still weren't sure when evacuated residents would be allowed back to their homes, but it could be as soon as tonight.

The human-caused fire started near Interstate 40, west of Woody Mountain Road around 4 p.m. Wednesday. Stoked by winds of nearly 40 mph out of the southwest, the fire moved quickly toward several campgrounds, mobile home parks and neighborhoods. Officials went door-to-door notifying residents, asking them to evacuate. In all, officials estimated between 500 and 750 people were evacuated. An evacuation center, which was turned into a Red Cross shelter, was set up at Flagstaff High School. Fifty-one people checked in and 24 folks spent the night there.

I concur with DSchur. Also consider calling the Peaks Ranger Station at (928) 526-0866. They can tell you if the smoke has affected air quality. I'm sure it will affect visibility; but with control of the fire and the right winds, air quality may not be affected this weekend.

Yes you can summit Humphreys from lockett meadow. You take Inner Basin to Weatherford to Humphreys trail.

I havent summited the peak from that side but I imagine it it quite easy to follow. If its like other trails in the area. It'll be a good hike that for sure. A definate fat burner with the altitude and all.
