Every so often I like to bring a little booze on a backpacking trip. My current cocktail of choice is Lynchburg Lemonade. My criteria for a good drink is that it is reasonably light and tastes good in the warm desert without ice.
My recipe:
1 liter Nalgene more than 1/2 full
crystal light lemonade to taste (Wal Mart brand works too)
Early Times Whiskey to taste (the bottles are perfect for fittng in a pack)
Some people may say, why bother with the lemonade? But I have to hydrate , you know.
In response to Hakatai's reply:
In tribute to W.C. Fields, I have to ask the question =
Are we talking about
a wake up libation
a breakfast libation
an early morning libation
a mid morning libation
a late morning libation
a lunch libation
an afternoon libation
a happy hour libation
a dinner libation
an after dinner libation
an around the campfire libation
a medicinal libation
or a nightcap?
In most situations, I would definitely agree with AJcanable. I would also add a good tequila, like Herradura Anejo. Winter hikes would favor a good scotch or brandy or whiskey. It would have to be a very unique set of circumstances for a good wine or champagne, but it is not out of the question and I would even pack in ice to chill the champagne
I can't see carrying in beer based on the weight to alcohol ratio.
I hope this doesn't start a big controversy with our herbal supplement hikers.
Anybody can make a hike harder. The real skill comes in making the hike easier.

Sounds like there are some afficianados out there. As far as WC Fields goes.
The libations I am refering to are of the post hiking and culinary preparation support variety, occasionally continuing on further into the evening. As for the rest of the day, herbal remedies may be administered as needed. Early morning being a favorite time of need. Nothing like a little Celestial Seasonings to start the day!
Sorry y'all.....I'm a wine snob and either take a bottle of Italian Pinot Grigio(white wine), pour it into Platypus and freeze it.......it's usually still nice and cold when I get to my destination. OR take a good St. Supery Cabernet Sauvignon(red) and drink it warm.

I am under age and do not support youth drinking. That being said, I do like my Cabo Wabo Anejo. :
No man should go through life without once experiencing healthy, even bored solitude in the wilderness, finding himself depending solely on himself and thereby learning his true and hidden strength
Well, as backpackers, we're supposed to get as much as possible in the lowest weight; right?
So, the "clear" winner has to be Everclear.......With some water & crystal light lemonade.... yumm...
For straight drinking, I avoid Everclear (who wouldn't?) & drink B&B.

did you say Herra Anejo? good taste, my friend. Also to note: Zafarrancha Reposado, Herencia Rep, and for a "mixteca", El Jimador can be used to season your steak/chicken/girlfriend
If its a short hike and downhill I'll pack in a few beers. Corona and heiny's both come in cans. Once consumed the empty cans weigh minimal plus the less weight of food also.
Wine in a platypus is awesome. I'm a red guy, but the frozen white is a great idea Trishness.
Booze - High quality tequila if MikeInFHAZ is buying, otherwise a little JD is just fine. Special trip? Mabye some Glenlevit.
Hakatai wrote:Those wines sound nice can I get either of those in a box?
Sorry, neither of these wines comes in a box. Although I have had the Franzia crisp white wine and the refreshing white and they are both pretty good.

I've heard say (from my wife, of all folks) that those wine-in-a-box bladders can hook up directly to a hydration line with very little modification...
