4 wheel drivin'

Post by kylemorgan »

I don't know if anyone is interested, but I'm getting ready to do some pretty heavy modification to my Jeep Cherokee. She's getting a bit tired so her 4.0 liter I6 is getting traded out for a Tuned Port Chevrolet 350 V8, new transmission, and tons of fun. The project is going to take me about a month or 2 but should garner some nice results.

My '78 Blazer has a new 350 in it. Otherwise it is seriously funky--a real hickmobile!

I really want to see that. I have an XJ as well, done quite a bit to it. Putting a 350 into one is going to be quite a feat! Love to see pictures! Any plans for the old parts? I'll take em' off your hands. :)

Delfindle,
I do not have any plans for the old parts other than sell them. Let me know what you need and we'll see if we can work a deal. I'm going to be replacing the engine, transmission (AW4), motor mounts, springs, shocks (fairly new) and the stock wheels along with some P235/75R15 Toyo Open Country A/Ts w/ about half their life left. I'm also pulling out the brand new radiator that I replaced a couple months ago.

Visit Jeepforum.com for info if you need any for your rebuild. Been driving jeeps for nearly 30 years. Have a 05 Jeep Wrangler X Willey Edition and a 93 Cherokee.

I may be up for some wheeling in the near future. Hopefully next week this will be one of my toys.

Waiting on some tires and other misc work to be done on it.

In response to Desertroux's reply:
Yeah it should be able to handle anything I want to throw at it! Can't wait to get it, the guy is touching up a few things on it for me and hopefully getting some fresh rubbers in the rear. I'm hoping it will be in my driveway by next weekend. I would say in the garage but it's about 1 1/2 inches too tall!

I guess I could just air down every day :o

In response to kylemorgan's reply:

Yea, I've been tossing around the idea of building up a stroked 4.6L out of a Jeep 4.0 for my XJ. You keeping the T-case (np231 I assume)?

Ran out of funds, sold the 350, rebuilt the 4.0. Didn't stroke but did use a bigger cam. Life is good.

Delfindle, what year is your XJ? Are you on NAXJA?

Sjcorrea, that is a good looking Intersmashable. Man those things are sexy. I used to know a guy who had one with over 400K on it. Bought it new. It's a wonderful, wonderful thing.

Just got this Monday!! Took it out a little yesterday and it seems to handle quite well off road. I'll do some more serious off roading later. Love this thing though. It's got the 3.7 V6. I'm sure that'll be enough for now :D

Congrats! The 3.7V-6 is a good choice for the Jeep-Liberty. Suggest that if it has those factory wheel mud guards, that before your wife gets use to seeing them, that you take them off and this will give it another ~2" of clearance around the wheel wells :)

I bought a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee about 2 months ago and finally just finished the 1st and 2nd and 3rd round of mods to it. Some slight tweaking still needed though.

Thanks for the tip Grasshopper! Yeah I love the engine size. Think it's perfect. I think I'll leave the mud guards for now though. Not gonna be rock crawling with this thing, well not yet anyway :D

Great looking Cherokee Davis!! What mods did you do?

4" Lift, Black Diamond Shocks, Kevin's Offroad Rock SLiders, Rusty's Offroad Transfer case skid plate, Rubicon Express steering stablizer, Rusty's front upper and lower control arms, Cragar 15x8 Soft 8 Wheels, 32" tires, rear tire swing away carrier, RK Front swaybar quicker disconnects, and my favorite mod of all- replaced my silver 2 1/2" antenna with a black short one :)

Future Upgrades:
Still needs some more steering help, too soft for me.
CB Radio
Aussie Rear Locker
Kevin's offroad front radiator support bracket and tow hooks - Already have just need to install it.
Also have a roof mounted light bar from kevin's but not sure if I will put that on with 4 KC type lights. Don't think it will fit in my garage with it on.

It's a work in progress and I made a $2900 Jeep cost about $5500 in under two months.

The Liberty is decent. I added 1.5 inches, slighty bigger tires and skid plates. It gets me where I need to go so far.
