Thicket Spring near Mt. Peeley-Mazatzals

Post by te_wa »

*june 9th/10th*

there is an easy trip into the Mazatzals in the works, including the Cornucopia-thicket spring loop which is going to (most likely) be a very short overnighter to Thicket Spring, with a dayhike and exploring sections of the area including old mines, buildings and the blue bus. Mt. Peeley summit is also doable. Basically, 1.5 miles to camp-then a 3 mile dayhike- and next day an easy 1.5 miles to trailhead. Kid friendly, as my 8 month old boy will (probably) be there. Get in on this easy, fun and scenic trip!

I like this hike and have done it often at night. Once while hiking (during the day) I passed the Bus apx 1/4 mile and hiked thru a dog leg in the trail. Came cross a bear about 15 yards away with his back toward me, taking a crap in the middle of the trail.

Jeez Mike!

All you had to do was mention bears. Now I'm interested!

Was in and area where the manzanita was quite high. Bear just went up the trail and away from me. I waited about 20 min. and continued on.

On another trip, same trail I was sitting off to the side of the trail near an old stream gauge station. While I was sitting there a young lady was heading up the trail looking at a GPS. She turned toward me looked up and let out a scream not heard since a saber tooth walked into the cave.

She was employed by the USGS and was checking on the condition of stream gauge stations. Took a few minutes for both of us to calm down.

Notice: this hike will be CANCELLED due to lack of reliable water and less than desirable temperatures. The daytime highs for this area are reaching close to 100 degrees.

There is an optional hike in the works, probably to focus on higher elevation, such as Barbershop trail to the nearest water source. Anyone with children is welcome to join since a)will be a short hike, less than 2 miles for sure and b)my 9 month old son will be going.
(the proposed section of Barbershop trail lies atop the Mogollon Rim just east of Milk Ranch Point and is a short 3/4 mile hike to a spring and creek)

A few of us were up doing the Cabin Loop this past W/E. It is looking pretty lush.
@ Aspen Spring there is an old cabin (not one of the FS ones) in a beautiful area. That is on the Houston Brothers trail, though. If you hiked in from the north (Pinchot) it's about 2.5 miles O/W of easy walking to Aspen.
Another hike/camp to consider is Kinder Crossing. Water is warm & perfect for swimming. Hike in is steep & about 2/3 of a mile. From where the trail meets ECC, head downstream about 5 minutes... beautiful swimming & camping!
Meal option: Bring cayenne & some raw chicken (small piece on a string to use as bait) and have yourself a crawdad boil - there were some I saw that must have been taking HGH.

Let me know. I am very interested in this type of hike. We have a 3 year old and a 5 year old. It's been a while since I put him on my back, so I better do some walking around the neighborhood with him in his packpack. We have two of the Kelty kids packs and they are really comfortable, although if my body isn't used to it, it doesn't matter what type of pack I get, I will be sore.
