showlow/pinetop
i just joined looking for short day hikes in the showlow/pinetop area. we are from tucson and plan on taking the first week of july to spend with some time with some friends in pinetop but we can't miss the opportunity to do some hiking. what i am looking for is something semi kid friendly. we have a seven year old but he can hold his own ( he has done hikes such as the six miles back to seven falls in sabino) so there can be some degree of difficultly. i plan on heading to summit hut to get some maps of the area .... hehehehe summit hut ... but any help would be great

Re: showlow/pinetop
The trails around Pinetop and Show Low were built by the TRACKS hiking group, in partnership with the Lakeside Ranger District. I don't think the Summit Hut will have ANY maps of these trails, but the Ranger District does. You can probably get your Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest map at Summit Hut, though. It will have only a few of these trails on it.
If you will be in the area only on a weekend, the ranger station will be closed. They may have a lot of the trails posted on their website. I always forget the exact web address, but you can google Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, and then find Lakeside Ranger District on there.
When I first visited the White Mtns. from Tucson in about 1990 these trails did not exist. TRACKS built 150 miles of trail in less than 10 years. (They got an award from the American Hiking Society for doing it, too!)
There are some signs along the highway showing trailheads. And most of the trails near these towns are fairly kid-friendly--not too steep, etc.
