Indian Garden

Post by lizp »

Is it ok to leave gear at the IG camp site while hiking to the river? i.e. will it be vandalized or stolen?

I've only been to Indian Garden once, and judging from the amount and types of people I saw there, I would say "yes", and "yes". But dude, it's the Grand Canyon. You can go whereever you want, more or less. Just sneak off trail and stash your gear under some rocks out of sight.

I wouldn't trust it. It isn't that far from the top of the canyon and they had some people vandalize the restrooms at that area a few years ago. If you were farther in the canyon maybe but 4.5 miles from the top doesn't weed out all the no good doers. They took the doors off the big outhouse and burned them and made little fires in and around the outhouse.

Look at a Pacsafe 85. It weighs about 1.5lbs but you can put anything you don't want two-legged varmints to steal in a pack and secure it. I got mine at the Sports Chalet in Scottsdale. It won't protect food from squirrels, ravens or ringtails. Maybe put what you want secured into the Ammo Cans and secure those with the PacSafe. I would rather carry 1.5lbs to IG and up instead of carrying everything to the River and up or risking vandalism. I have used the Pacsafe at BA campground when we do day hikes on our rest day.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like anywhere people are, there's the potential for this to happen. ANd thank you for reminding me that the Gr CYn is huge enough to stash!
